Mild warning for his players - from the OS

Moyes Won't Accept Slacking
by Adam Clark | Wednesday 22 April 2009, 11:24

Everton manager David Moyes has told his players he will not accept any "slacking" as the season heads towards its climax.

The Goodison chief says he has no reason to believe his squad will not give their all between now and the campaign-closing FA Cup final, but warned his Wembley starting line up is far from set in stone.

With just six Barclays Premier League fixtures remaining and final places up for grabs, Moyes is expecting some big performances from his side in the coming weeks.

"The players have to drive themselves on," he said. "If they want to enjoy another nice day [at Wembley] they are going to have to show me that they can play well enough between now and the end [of the season].

"They have done that up to now. I have had no reason to suggest that they won’t do.

"If they don’t perform then the slackers would be brought to attention and called out.

"If any of them thought it was natural to go slack then they would be going slack at Wembley as well because they wouldn’t be at Wembley.

"If any of them think that’s natural to them, it’s completely unnatural to me. It can happen, but it won’t be natural to me, so I’ll need to do something about it, if they went that way. I just won’t allow it."
Speaking to the media ahead of Wednesday's trip to Cup final opponents Chelsea, Moyes took the opportunity to thank Bill Kenwright for his role in driving the Club forward.

In the immediate aftermath of Sunday's penalty shootout victory over Manchester United, the Everton chairman declared his belief that Moyes is among the best five managers in the world game.

Grateful for the extolment, Moyes is keen to ensure Mr Kenwright takes a fair portion of the credit.

"I am really pleased for Bill because he puts a lot of time and effort into Everton Football Club," said Moyes. "I think when we are looking at football now, if you are a true football supporter, you should be pleased for Bill Kenwright.

"He has given everything he can and he's had to suffer quite a bit because the Everton supporters are unforgiving, they want success like every other group of supporters."

And, while Moyes shares such a desire for success, he isn't convinced a boat-load of money will guarantee new glories.

"Everybody would like more money, but you have got to be able to work without," he said. "We have been given every penny they [the board] can give and if you get the right players in and they are hungry for success, then it can happen.

"We have a long way to go and it will be hard to compete against the top boys, we know that. You could give me £100m and it may not get me any closer.

"We might just get on Easyjet like the average man would. We might just do that. We might just get on the bus. But my job is to get up and feel we can compete with the best.

"Our success won’t be done on a cheque book. Ours will be done by pretty hard graft. I take pride in that."

I like the last part. Its time for the players to graft if they wont to be with the big boys.

We're still gonna get battered by Chelski though.

Does the Yak account for a slacker, or is that just a disability not being able to run faster than 4mph?

I think it's more than fair to say that there's a lot more to the whole VDM story than any of the supporters have a clue about.

I doubt we'll ever know and he'll be let go when his contract expires.

So on the surface, sure, it's easy to say that he's a slacker and it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

I just think there's much more to it than what we know.
