Hi Guys,

Looking for any advice from fellow blues living or have lived in NZ.

My company are in the process of opening an office in NZ and have asked me to run it. The good thing is the company are not set to any specific area and as such have basically told us to look into where we would like to live in NZ and they will find the office space in that area.

We have been looking and like the idea of any of the following:

Northland
Tauranga
New Plymouth
Palmerston North

Does anyone live or have lived in these areas and can tell me a bit more about them? We have three kids aged 10, 4 and 1 so schooling is very important. Our kids are also very active doing dance, gym etc so out of school activities are a must. Lastly my wife is a partner in a solicitors firm and would like to stay in the legal profession although without the pressure of partnership at the moment.

Any and all advise would be really welcome.

Thanks

Good luck in your new job mate, NZ looks beautiful.

Northland and Palmy are a bit of a hole (low socioeconomic area and a student/farming town.
New Plymouth is nice and a good place to raise kids in the outdoors, I just spent a year living down there. My only concern would be how far away from the major centres it is, and it can be quiet on occasion.
Tauranga is also a great place, more expensive at present seeing as it's probably set to be bigger than Hamilton in the next 10-15 years as it undergoes a boom as people move out of Auckland and the port is doing work. Great lifestyle there with lovely beaches not far away.
There's a quick snapshot for you @harris78

ranking your list
1)Tauranga (if you have plenty of readies this is a no-brainer)
2)New Plymouth
3)Palmerston North
4) Northland (best climate but a few social issues...nice place for a holiday though)

Exactly this. I lived in Tauranga almost 5 years, until 2011. It was the 5th biggest city then, but really just a large town. Kicked on hugely since I left. It will cost though, dont underestimate that. It will be easier for your mrs to get work there too.

New Plymouth somehow gets voted best place to live in NZ. Ive only been once, seemed a good place, but it is far from anywhere.

Palmy, bloody Palmy. Don't do this to yourself. Think Milton Keynes and then move along, rapidly.

Northland - many issues up there, and for me the climate in Tauranga is better.

Other places to consider are Wellington - thats where I am. Dont believe all thats written about the climate. And its the football city of NZ. Other places is Napier/Hastings. It is a bit like east Anglia for being away from other cities but has a lot on and awesome climate.

Send me pm if theres anything in particular you are after.

@harris78 ...what industry are you in?
Suggestions made in this thread of Hawkes Bay...(Napier or Havelock North) you should consider...and Wellington. Nelson as well (top of South Island)
