Really needs to be seriously looked at. A huge cost and badly abused..

I know someone who earns over £40k that had a bike crash years ago and got a metal plate in his leg. Registered disabled but is fine. Can easily afford his own car but receives Motability payments and gets a free car. Boils my pee that does. The official findings are worse..

It shows that 9,100 people whose ‘main disabling condition’ is related to alcohol or drug abuse have been given the ‘higher mobility’ benefit, which entitles them to a Motability car.

The allowance is paid to 28,700 people whose main condition is asthma and 123,900 with unspecified back pain.

Arthritis sufferers are the largest category, with 506,300 claimants entitled to a car. Roughly one in three people who are paid the allowance uses it to obtain a car.

If you physically are unable to work then it is understandable. But alcoholic? ffs.. £1.5 billion a year is spent on this.

Motability cars have been given to some parents of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The old rules have been changed and it's gone from DLA to PIP - Personal independence Payment

You've used an example of a child with ADHD this group now stand more chance of qualifying for the payment, because it's now trying to cater for people who have trouble planning and carrying out journeys. You seem outraged that an autistic spectrum child might qualify for PIP, but have you even given a minutes thought to how difficult mobility could be for a family in that situation. Public transport is likely to prove stressful to the child.

Frequent yourself with the current reality before decrying the system pal.

Worse thing is, I know someone with genuine issues (has regular black outs where he just collapses out of the blue), who has been battling for literally years to receive decent benefits in line with what he is able to do with his condition.

What? The supposed ADHD, if you believe that exists, doesn't in my eye constitute being worthy of receiving a free vehicle. Even if autistic, why cant they pay for their own car? If you need to care full time and cant work then fair enough.

Haha I love the knobheads that come out with this. Are you aware of the process you have to go through to get a proper diagnosis of this? I'm not talking about the chavvy tits that tell you their kid has it, or attention seekers that say their kid must have it, but I mean the properly diagnosed ones?

I suspect not, otherwise you wouldn't make such an uneducated moronic comment.

Quite.
Nobody invites an accident on themselves, but to be handed all that on a plate when it's not needed is infuriating.

At the same time, I have no income, claim no benefits, yet have to pay the government £24 a month to buy the asthma & cholesterol medication I need to stay alive.

PIP isn't means tested
I wonder, does a chronic condition where one is utterly dependent on asking a doctor every month, for permission to get a drug to allow you to breathe for another 30 days qualify as dependence in the government's eyes?

As far as I can see you need to have a condition a bean counter in an office can actually see.
"ah right, I see you have no arms, so you qualify. Just sign here... "

Speaking as a (former now retired:celebrate: teacher) This is true.

However, it's also true that the ease with which people can successfully qualify to have their little scrotes diagnosed with ADHD is directly related to the funding the government of the moment makes available.

Could argue about what that means all day.

As ever, the few spoil it for the many, get all the publicity and the rest end up getting tarred with the same brush.
how to suss them out is the hard part, once you're 'in the system' - you're 'in' for life, a few people I know have been 'in' for 30yrs - 3 generations now and think nothing of it, in fact complain to the roof about...well you name it, they whinge about it.
