are in a whole heap of trouble.

For anyone who doesn't want to read the whole thing, here are the main bits:

This week the future of AS Monaco was dealt a huge blow as the Ligue 1 sides unanimously decided that any side playing in the top flight of French football, must abide by French financial laws

Under French tax law high income earners are required to pay 75% of their income as tax, meaning that clubs will have to pay a lot more to attract top players

As it stands in Monaco there is no tax on income which makes it easier for the club to pay higher wages as they are unaffected by the same problems which face the majority of other French clubs.

Despite their relegation to Ligue 2 last season they still spent more money in the summer (20 million euros) than any other team in the French top flight and more money than the rest of the teams in Ligue 2 combined.

All clubs playing in the French top flight must have a fiscal residence in France.

They are not a well supported club and attendances are low so there will not be a point in the foreseeable future when their turnover will be substantial enough to afford the wage bill.

Basically because Monaco's players will now have to pay the income tax they are likely to be wanting more money from the club, money which will have to come straight out of the owners pocket because of a lousy turnover.

75% income tax? Bloody hell. No wonder Beckham is donating it to charity, he would have bugger all left anyway

Yeah exactly. Ibrahimovic gets paid about 48 million euros a year just so he can take home 12 million.

This could be a massively good thing for French football as long as PSG and the likes keep some top stars there. Lots more clubs will have to rely on bringing players through and giving them a chance to play.

Could Monaco play in the Italian leagues? Might be better for them anyway

Yeah they could do, whether they'd get approved is another thing.

Think it will definitely be better for French football but still think Monaco are going to struggle.

Do Monaco still play at that weird stadium? Small capacity but looks pretty?

Yeah, and they can't even fill it. They generate no revenue.

The only thing that might save them is football tourism and glory hunters now that they're back in Ligue 1

Lovely stadium mate. Not just a footy stadium, it has olympic swimming pool, basketball courts and a massive car park under the pitch. IIRC the local school use all the facilities.
