I work in a university and every year I get one year older and every year I get to deal with a new set of 18 year olds. Every year they get worse. Next year their dates of birth will all read ??/??/2000. I was trying to cope with the fireworks during an acid trip by the Thames NYE 1999. For that reason we will never get along.
I'm not saying there wasn't public mourning beforehand - I'm highlighting the difference in that and grieving. The whole book of condolence, throwing flowers at hearses, camping out for days, etc. That started with Diana, and was a real watershed. I agree that social media has helped crank it all up another notch. The unsavoury aspect to that is that a significant number of people hijack the event, trying to make it personal to them, trying to validate themselves in some way.
I've spent a weekend drinking around them and to be honest I like them a lot. Obviously after this post has been long forgotten I'll continue to ridicule them as that's the game, and my right as an arl arse.
They're happy and positive and less of the hard edge a lot of our generation had around that age. There's more discussion of feelings amongst them and they have far less prejudices than the generations above. They are a bit excitable and love a good photo opportunity and weird demonstrations of status, but for a generation that's been utterly failed by the system I'm a big fan of them and their weird sub cultures. They're witty and self depreciating as a rule too.
Now get off your mobile phone and go find a job you drain pipe jeans wearing box room burden.
