Uefa president Michel Platini says goal-line technology is too expensive for use in the Champions League.

Platini, 57, said he would rather the money was spent on youth football.
"I prefer to put more money into youth football and infrastructure than spend it on technology when there's a goal in a blue moon that hasn't been seen by a referee," he said.
Platini added that he was happy with the five-man referee system, used in the Champions League and Europa League.

Fifa is set to use goal-line technology at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Platini said the technology would need to be installed in 280 stadiums for European football, which the former France international sees as unnecessary.

"It would cost around 54 million euros (£46m) over five years for this technology, so it's quite expensive for the sort of mistake which happens once every 40 years," he said.
"In the Champions League, I'm very happy with the results (of a five-man team). Practically no mistakes have been made and the referees see practically everything that happens on the pitch."

seriously platini? who hired this guy

I was made up when he first got the job, seeing as he was such an excellent footballer it seemed that he would be ideal for it. Since then he's made a complete arse of himself over and over again. All the money generated by the champions league and they can't afford it ? really ?.

I can see where he's coming from tbh, especially as not all leagues are going to use it, so in some cases the technology would be installed and then never properly used. You'd have to have the system in every stadium of every European top flight club right ?

Premier League is a different story because you've only got 20 grounds to worry about plus the ones that come up or down every season, and they're definitely going to be used.

Who would pay to maintain the systems in countries that wouldn't use the technology in their leagues ? Presumably UEFA. Again, more money.

Wow, that's quite a few outright lies to tell in one interview. My favourite lie was that referees miss a goal "once every 40 years".

They could just use normal TV coverage and let the referee go to it if they need, just like you see in Rugby League. No special cameras there. Pathetic from Platini.

You'd imagine if a company like Sony implemented the technology and called it the Sony Cam or some such, it would be great advertising for them.

Personally I would rather we didn't have goal line technology. The 5 man refereeing system in Europe seems like it is working, the money could be better spent elsewhere in my opinion.

Every time that man opens his mouth he spews out nonsense. How much money does the champions league generate every season? How much of that money is creamed off the top by UEFA?

The man is an ass.

Exactly, TV cameras are pretty good at spotting if a ball went in or not, and are already screening the matches. Why not use what is already there? It's like Platini is the reincarnation of Ned Ludd.

But yet how many billions of Euro do pro football clubs make and apart from that secondry revenue from the likes of betting at sponsership, its to big an issue to leave to human error.

Plantini is often of his rocker.

What utter rubbish. What a farce. Of all the excuses they could have come up with to justify holding the sport back, they actually try financial constraints, the one thing we absolutely know the game has none of.

THIS^

Platini is an absolute belter, he doesn't want the technology being introduced as he sees it as the 'thin end of the wedge' as once it's proved to work perfectly then the clamour for technology i.e. replays etc to be used to reduce refereeing howlers will grow & he'll have lost the 'grass roots' excuse.

this is what i was thinking. i understand what brennan is saying with regards to more money - i mean they don't HAVE to do it, the audience will always be there, it would just be nice for them to actually consider doing something that would undoubtedly benefit the sport.

imo, the 5 ref thing doesn't work, if a linesman misses a ball crossing the line because of his position, it's no guarantee the 5th official will see it because he is closer, what if the keeper is blocking his view of the ball?

the only reason why they dont want goal line technology is because these decisions generally go for the "media darling" side, if it is Utd or Barca the ball crosses the line if it was a smaller team it doesnt thats the way they want it.
