2024/25 Michael Keane

Keeping micheal keane shouldn't be an option. He could do a nice job playing every week for a mid table championship side. Thats his level.
I’m inclined to agree.

He did really well under Carlo and had a mini-resurgence under Moyes. What happened in between was an absolute catastrophe.

His fellow defenders and JP must have the jitters when they know he’s starting, wondering which one of him will turn up.

There are too many holes to fill in this squad for us to buy a replacement for Keane and not have that impact the quality of player we can buy in another position.

Getting him on a new deal on reduced wages is basically us filling one of many squad spaces with a free transfer.

We’re not talking about a first-choice centre back here, and I think his most recent performances have been solid. Moyes improves players, and if he wants to keep Keane, that’s good enough for me.

Great news for all GOT users: an effective antidote for this post is now available, here:

This is what I feel will happen, and tbh I won't be gutted. We'll have (hopefully) three centre halves ahead of him in the pecking order next season, so unless we're really unlucky he'll only start about 5 games, and he's shown he's more than capable of coming in and doing a job. Obviously he's by far the weakest of the four defenders, like you say, he's a known backup option that allows us to spend money elsewhere. I don't think it's a disaster by any stretch of the imagination if he signs for an extra year.

He's also significantly more effective in the opposition box than both Branthwaite and Tarkowski, averaging a goal every 10-12 games, compared to Tarkowski's 1 in 38 and Branthwaite's 1 in 22 games. Impressive.

When he gets wheeled out for a derby, or a cup quarter final, because Tarkwoski and Branthwaite have gone down, and then he drops a clanger and sends us out, remember all the posts on here that said it’s ok to keep
him because he’ll be fourth choice.

If he stays, he’ll play, and he’s not good enough to play. How many times does he need to have a few decent end of season games when there’s zero pressure on to dupe a load more people into keeping him a round before people wake up and realise what he’s been doing year after year.

Get rid now

Yup, it's self-sabotaging delusion.

He's not good enough - simple as. And while we may not be able to get rid of everyone in that category in one fell swoop, we should not be giving such players - remaining here only by default - any "extension". If he's out of contract, that should be it. We need to be buying a centre-half regardless, to add to Tarkowski (who is at the veteran stage). Branthwaite, and O'Brien. We don't have to spend a fortune doing that - but we need our recruitment team to get it right. And that's what we should be demanding of them at all times anyway.

Yeah we’re talking about buying one CB who doesn’t even need to go straight into the 11 and some people are acting like this is a bigger risk than keeping a known failed quantity in Keane. I’d rather give any minutes he gets to the best youth CB we have. At least if he makes mistake he’ll learn from them. Keane has had 8 years here and hasn’t improved one bit.
