2024/25 Michael Vincent Keane

Surely a footballer wants to play games in the last couple of years of his career
Lots of footballers don't seem overly keen to play games at any point in their career do they? I can definitely see why you might rather stay living in your current home, playing with people you know etc, maybe even getting paid more, rather than just going and playing just for the sake of it in case someone off the internet thinks you're weird.

I am definitely in the minority here but i have no problem with keeping him tbh. He is very annoying and never a starter but handy to have as a 3rd or 4th choice backup that doesn't need bedding in and if he is okay with that then may as well keep him than try and find another.
Must admit I'm sort of on the fence.

If you have a 4th choice CH you really don't want them to play except in an emergency and that's exactly where I am with Keane.

I'd much prefer to sign a young centre half as cover who might make the odd mistake but has the ability to develop rather than keep Keane who we know is very likely to come up with an error that is often critical.

On the other hand , as you say , it's one less player to bring in and integrate.

If he stays he surely has to be on massively reduced wages.

We need a squad.

Take the last 3 games of the season...

When he started in the win away vs Fulham - we didn't have any one else.

When Branthwaite went off injured in the win vs Southampton - we didn't have any one else.

When he started in the win away at Newcastle - we didn't have any one else.

We're in the same situation, except the loss of Young squad wise in defence.

Resource/spending isn't infinite.

We don't want to be spending on centre halfs to come in as back up to Branthwaite, O'Brien and Tarkowski.

At times we'll likely need O'Brien to help at full back.

He's fine as cover.

Ultimately it comes down to whether he'd accept the salary we'd offer for a backup.

Who do we sign that is happily 4th choice? No established player takes that job & the youngster would cost a lot if you don't already have them in your youth set up. Through gritted teeth & subject to the contract wage reflecting his 4th choice position i would be ok (just) with Keane getting a small extension. If it means we keep our funds for right wing, striker, right back etc then OK.
We knew there would still be an element of pain this window. Moyes even suggested months ago that we weren't necessarily psr clear although it seems we are good with that now. If giving Keane a short extension is the worst thing to happen this window, Gana signs on & recruitment is healthy then I will be at peace.
Having said that if Keane signs, Gana doesnt & our recruitment sucks then there will be hell to pay.

He’s a liability more often than not. It’s such a shame we don’t have any prospects coming through to push for a first team place , potentially saving us having to resign players like this

Its rare you'd have an academy prospect at centre half who you'd lash into a Premier League team anyway.

Those prospects would be out on loan before being a backup/coming into a Prem side.
