Is it me or do defenders always seem.to play better when they wear some kind of headband?, Keane, stones, funes mori, butcher. Probably some kind of accidental acupuncture.

Pleasantly surprised that Michael is playing this well, looking more solid by the game. Kept an in-form Mitrovic very quiet indeed. I'd be tempted to pair him up with Mina as 1st choice, when available.

I think one of the major reasons for Keane looking better is the fact that Zouma's pace takes away some of the threat of us being caught out by balls in behind, so he can just concentrate on doing what he's comfortable with rather than constantly being concerned about his weaknesses being exploited. I'm not sure Mina has the pace to allow us to do that, and think you'd suddenly find that Keane looked remarkably similar to last season if he was partnered by somebody without pace.

We are talking about a player improving when it would have been difficult to have been any worse, when he comes up against a fast breaking forward line normal service will be resumed.

to be fair, he played well against arsenal and they've got fast players

sessegnon vietto and schurlle are fast as well and he was good against Fulham

Jagielka’s been doing this for years yet gets called our best centre back on here all the time. It’s almost like people notice what they want to.
Jagielka used to have the pace to make it back in time and was often making goal saving tackles and receiving praise for it despite the situation being created by himself. One of the reasons he dropped off a cliff in form was because of his pace fading.

Noticed this with that Maguire tackle they were raving about against Newcastle on the weekend, Newcastle get the chance through his mistake and then the only reason he's able to catch up to make the tackle is because of the Newcastle player's hesitation - not a mention that he dropped a clanger in the first place.

Interesting point, you might well be right.

Mina and Zouma wouldn't be too shabby either.

Said it in the match thread and before but I really do think the nasty infection he got after injury almostly immediately after signing for us had a massive impact on making him look cumbersome, slow and lethargic when he came back to playing. It can be massively impactive upon your fitness, mental well-being and physicality. I don't think many people take it in to consideration at all.

This season he has been our best centre half by a mile. Even before Saturday. He looks, sharp, aggressive and much more pacey. Some may put that down to his playing partners, I think it's much more likely to be a full recovery followed by a full preseason.

He's been very good. Long may it continue.
