Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Hi everybody. It's rained and awful lot today. I am wearing a jumper - winter is upon us.
I went to my first parish council meeting last night. It was pretty good. I'm now privy to some of the vitriol from the knuclke draggers. Mostly about taking down their flags in order to put the Christmas lights up. You wouldn't believe some of the comments. Really foul and quite threatening. But enough of that. We've got a busy few weeks ahead- Granny duties, two visits to Liverpool on 1st and 6th December. The first one is for the funeral of one of my Mum and Dad's oldest friends who passed away recently- while attending her brother's funeral! She was lovely - the head teacher of St Christopher's Primary School in Speke back in the day.
The second visit is for a Christmas get together with my cousins so that should be fun. We're also going to Nottingham to see Chris and Sophie in a couple of weeks and will probably have a little extra passenger with us because Mum is working.
I'm hoping the latest Epstein revelations will bring Trump down but he seems untouchable. One thing is sure he won't go quietly.
I hated PE too @Gwladysover . Mostly because I was rubbish at all of it. I still am. I aspire to be average! Our nuns were not really big into sport so a cross country run round Sefton Park was the hardest thing we did. There were plenty of shortcuts so upu didn't really have to exert yourself.
Have a lovely evening everyone x

Our house backed onto St Chrissy’s , remember seeing the priest walking around the school yard reading his bible, and when they use to have Speke fete in the school playing fields I use to charge my mates a few Pennie’s to jump over our back fence to get in, think it was a shilling to get into back in the day

Really good that! The size of the brains in those people who can conceive then execute such feats of engineering. I must say though blue, some of those tunnels were very creepy in places.
The days before laser levels and 2.5 cm out of line !!! How did they do that ? I used to use a dumpy level to set out levels then learned the Theodolite which was the one surveyors used but that accuracy below ground -no horizon ,no bearings -incredible . My grandfather worked on the tunnel and said the conditions were terrible ,wet feet all day which gave some trenchfoot ,they could stand on a nail and not feel it !
On the made of hard stuff ,it was neccessity I needed the money.

Good morning all on this chilly day only our second below freezing .We had a beautiful clear sky last night ,since AT mentioned the space station yonks ago I have realised how few we actually get here .So equipped with theskylive dot com I am hoping it is clear tonight .
I hope all had a good night and have a great day ,COYB

Morning all and what a dreadful one it is weather wise. Been raining all night and still at it. One of the joys of getting old is at least we don’t have to go out in it. Feel for the kids going by on their way to school. It’s a miserable journey for those that have to bike/walk, then they have to cart their wet coats round as they don’t have coat pegs and lockers anymore.
Have a good day, all.💙

What a night of laughter that was AND we beat Portugal 🇮🇪

Glad you had a good night. I didn’t watch the Ireland game but I saw Seamus and O’Brien were playing, this from another thread :
90+5mins: Ireland 2-0 Portugal

“ Seamus Coleman, who hasn't played for Everton since early October, still out there running around like a young lad. He'll sleep tonight, will Seamy.”

I watched it in full this morning and Coleman was great. I can’t believe how rattled Ronaldo was by the crowd

Shock dicovery is that it could be that @Barnfred 55 lives abroad ! Apparently Cornwall has never actually joined England !
"Legal opinion: Legal opinions, including those from the Boundary Commission, have concluded that a de jure joinder (a formal, legal union) with England has never been achieved."
That doesn’t surprise me, they’ve always been a bolshie lot these Cornish folk, with their “ Song of the Western Men “ about Trelawny , 20,000 of them threatening to march on London etc. I can see why @Barnfred 55 fits right in down there 😉

Not sure where you got that from Blue. There will be a lot of Cornish separatists who would want this to be true but I'm not aware that the Boundary Commission have ever declared this. Not publicly anyway. What's the source?

Just to be really boring, I'm pretty sure Cornwall became part of Wessex around the time of Alfred, so before England was actually a thing. So was part of England from the outset, although it does of course have it's own Celtic heritage, language and customs.

Historically Cornwall has a cultural history as a Celtic nation alongside Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man and Brittany.

It was an independent kingdom until Anglo Saxon times but it's distinct territorial identity has remained - first as an earldom then as a Duchy which it remains today, meaning Cornwall is not (and has never been) a County of England.

A lot of its identity as distinct from England comes from how rural and remote it is and, as well as its rich mineral resources which meant it had an export economy of materials and skills independent of agriculture. Westminster even tried to curtail its economic power in the tin boom by levying higher taxation on Cornish tin than that from neighbouring Devon.

It has its own language & flag and its distinct identity is recognised in lots of ways - some are more ceremonial but some are legislative such as the devolution of powers and recognition of the Cornish people under the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.

These might not affect most people in their daily lives, however, if you die in Cornwall without a legal will technically your possessions pass to the Duchy of Cornwall (Prince William) rather than next of kin as in England. The same is true of company assets for a dissolved company registered in Cornwall. While this might seem archaic and like one of those 'pub facts' about weird laws it really happens and in 2020 King (then Prince) Charles collected £1m from deceased people in Cornwall.

The push for legislative independence is largely seen as a fringe movement and often referred to with irony or as a punch line, however, Cornwall's distinct cultural identity is widely recognised - as is the effect of the current meshed legislative approach where Cornwall is treated simultaneously as separate and distinct depending on the issue at hand.

And don't even start on the Isles of Scilly...

I did in fact read anothe passage that said it has never legally been admitted to England . I will retrace my steps.
