Hello!

I've recently been contributing in the forums and posting more but this is my first thread.. apologies in advance if it should have gone somewhere else!

My girlfriend and I are heading to Australia next week and as part of the trip we are planning to hire a campervan and drive from Melbourne to Adelaide. We have 8 days to do this, we pick up the van on the 4th December and return it to Adelaide on the 12th. Flight home is 13th so we may get to Adelaide earlier if it’s worth spending some time in - but that is the sort of thing I am looking for some pointers on. Has anyone done this trip or are any Aussie blues who can give some advice on the best places to stop, things to do etc?

We’ve done a bit of research already through google and come up with something loose, but would appreciate any first hand knowledge.

Our first stop is set as Apollo Bay as we have friends there so that will probably account for 4th / 5th.

After this the following all seem to be popular destinations:

Port Fairy
Mount Gambier
Coonawarra
Robe
Victor Harbour
McLaren Vale
Robe
Kangaroo Island

As we only have about 6 days excluding Apollo Bay, I don't want to rush around like a headless chicken trying to fit absolutely everything in and would prefer to go for quality over quantity. it seems from the research that it's not just the place that you are visting, e.g. Port Fairy, but the surrounding area and the various sights and activities around it - as such it may be worth staying in some places longer than others as there is more to do, does anyone have any 'must do's' from the above list to help us decide?

From my side, a few things I fancy

The blue lake at Mount Gambier
Giant fossilised animals at Naracoorte caves national park
McLaren vale wines

A few other questions:

Are there a lot of camp sites to park the van and is it best to book in advance? I've heard January they tend to be full and it's best to book but not sure about December?

We like the sound of the wine trails and cellar doors at Coonawarra & McLaren Vale - does anyone have any info on how these work? Is it possible to just walk between them and do a DIY tour rather than paying someone to do it for you? Is the wine cheap, expensive.. we're hoping cheap as we are going directly to the source!

In terms of visiting places like the Blue Lake in Mount Gambier, I have heard permits may be required for some areas.. are these definitely required and if so can you just buy them when / if you get there?

Is Adelaide worth spendiong much time in? We have sort of not considered it when planning the road trip as there is so much else to do, and already have stays in Melbourne and Brisbane before we start with the campervan so weren't too bothered about another city stay.

Finally the most important question of all... I will be in Melbourne when we play the RS on 2nd December at 16.15pm UK time.. I believe these equates to 3.15am Melbourne time. Does anyone have any tips on how I might be able to watch the game? I was thinking my best bet may be a casino, or maybe a sports bar but not sure if any will be open.

Thanks in advance!

If you're in Victoria you need to see Phillip Island. It is remarkable.

In Melbourne for the derby, go to Crown Casino, it's open 24 hours but take ID with you because they ask everyone. There's loads of restaurants and bars in there, has a good atmosphere, night clubs on the top floor. The women in there are A* quality

Thanks a lot for that mate, sounds spot on!

Go to mollydooker vineyard in McLaren vale (https://www.mollydookerwines.com)
The wine is hands down the best I've ever tasted. Bring back as much as you can, it's almost impossible to get hold of in the UK and it's dead expensive.

Casino is the best bet for watching the football. Adelaide is a very pretty city and has some great beaches such as Glenelg (do spend a day there), but not really a tourist mecca so you would be better looking at attractions outside the city such as kangaroo island or Barossa valley.
In terms of the driving, I would highly recommend booking accommodation in advance as soon as you can. you are travelling in peak Christmas, so your choices are probably already limited.
I haven’t done it myself, but the great ocean drive is meant to be absolutely stunning, so make sure you leave enough time to just stop at random spots to take in the view. The 12 apostles is along that route and is one of the main attractions.
And watch out for Mick Taylor

Being from Brisbane can I get in wearing shorts and flip-flops

Blue lake is very cool. Theres also some beautiful gardens in a cave sink hole if i remember right. The girl will love it.

We’re off over the nullabor and to Perth the next few weeks.
