Hey Guys,

Any US Evertonians living in the above areas/been to - that can give some pointers on places to visit on a road trip. Next July My wife, three daughters and i are flying into Boston and then hiring an RV to do a road trip for fourteen days. Just looking for some advice on places that must be seen. I want to go to Martha's Vineyard and the wife wants to see Salem. Other than that we are looking at places to visit around Maine,Vermont,New Hampshire etc.

Anyone have any recommendations for places to see/things to do?

Do a day trip to Salem. You will be close enough to head to NY city for a few days as well. It's only about a 4 hour drive from Boston.

Head to upper state NY as well towards Niagra Falls. Amazing scenery.

New England is a great base to see a good deal of the US. Washington DC and Philadelphia are within a days drive.

Hanover in New Hampshire is nice place to go for a weekend, but small though. You could do that, and Woodstock, VT in an afternoon. Woodstock is gorgeous, but a bit posh. Portland, ME is fabulous - one of the only nice small towns in North America. Burlington, VT is great too... right by the lake and perfect in the summer. Perhaps the only small town on the whole continent not devastated by sprawl (thanks comrade Sanders!)

bit of a hike, but Bretton Woods is really nice. Big old railway hotel... you can eat and drink on the veranda. lovely.

I'd visit Provincetown on the Cape (Cape Cod). Also, New Port Rhode Island is pretty nice, some huge mansions and other things. Cape Ann (north of Boston) is also nice--I love the feel of Gloucester...cool industrial fishing town. If you plan on putting your RV on the Ferry to MV, then make sure to make reservations well in advance if its on a weekend. Some towns are dry on MV, such as Vineyard Haven, where the public ferry takes you from Woods Hole to MV. Other towns on MV are not.

So you could go Boston and then south to Cape Cod, then onto Newport RI, and into NYC; or as others have said, you could go to Boston, then north to Cape Ann, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine. Maine in the summer is largely unbeatable.

I would check out Lonely Traveler forums and other online travel-guide forums. These are constantly updated with good itineraries from folks. I use them all the time to get ideas.

I think someone here is from Portland, ME, plus 1 or 2 in Boston.

Drive N and train S. you don't want to be driving in/around NYC. You could do Connecticut, but why? Maybe upstate NY, but RI is as far S as you want to go. Mt Desert Island is supposedly fabulous, but I've not been. But all the ME coast I've seen is gorgeous (although maybe more like England than the rest of the US). If you can get into Quebec, that's probably worth the effort too.

Northern Maine is the only real wilderness east of the Mississippi River.

Bar Harbor is a freaking long drive. Its nice tho.

Portland is fun for a day trip. Dont get a car in Boston except on the weekend.

Mount Washington is neat (bring a coat its always below freezing there) so is that area around NH (Keene).

Western Mass is pretty nice.

Adirondiacks are my favorite place in NE area.

Visit Connecticut!! In South East Connecticut you can go to Mystic and get a pizza at Mystic Pizza!!!

Then head over to Groton and visit the Submarine Force Museum and get a tour of the USS Nautilus... The world's first nuclear power vessel!!

This is an interesting comment. My Desert Island is about a 5-hour drive from Boston. Depending on where you live in the US, that's a very long/short drive. But it's probably very long for most from the U.K. (Not that you'd do it in one day likely.) Still, New England is probably close is size to England, and it's a small corner of the US

So maybe not all of Connecticut is boring
