Mass exodus of UK football journalists to American website 'The Atheletic'

There hasn't been one media outlet in the UK covering football in the last 30 years that has been able to avoid the basic economics of the market: the vast majority of customers support United, Liverpool and (to a lesser extent) Arsenal, so the content must reflect that to maximise profit.

From that point ensues a downward spiral, and you end up with (e.g.) the BBC putting out more coverage of Klopp's Joey Tribiani impressions than transfer window activity.

I can't see that being any different for the Athletic.

I guess it depends though since it seems the intent is for the Athletic to cover more than just football. You shouldn’t then have to cater to the popular teams readers because losing some of them is outweighed by fans of other sports signing up.

Which pieces in particular led you to this conclusion?
I dont subscribe to it, so I cant hand specific examples. As the critical article I cut and pasted points out the Athletic is controlled by a handful of venture capitlaist companies and they'll be looking to build up a large following before bringing in advertising. The journalists are the same ones who were available to read in the so called quality press (and, laughably, peope like Dominic King and James Pearce). They're wedded to the football industry and wont be biting the hand that feeds them anytime soon.

It is not worth paying for in my opinion. A lot of fluff
They've done well to poach/recruit talent. They have a top of the bin reporting staff.

Not sure they are doing things so well that I can't find decent content on free sites.
It's a con. All the journalists are embedded with clubs and serve their propaganda purposes...as they did in their old jobs with the 'qualities' and red tops.
