Tbh the Palace game was the first time in ages I’ve seen us actually work an opposition over consistently for large periods of the game. Palace actually defended really well but we were stretching them down both flanks and winning the ball off their counters so easily. We eventually wore them down at the end just through the sheer repetition of us going outwide and so many times that eventually one wasn’t properly closed down and we capitalised. Gomes transformed the level of midfield control we had.
Completly agree it may not always come off and we may end games with only a point, but we have to keep doing the right things and asking questions.
A number of players and Silva's ex players have commented on the level of detail in the preparation it's been three since early on but is now coming to the fore and getting results some big tests await us particularly away from home in he next month or so.

...which means automatically that Martinez couldn't have hatched a game plan to get past another European club over two legs....we beat Wolfsburg - a team as good as Kiev - home and away in the group stage by an aggregate score of 6-1 that season.

What does all this matter now, leave history where it is and move on. Not just you Dave but the others should take note as well.

We have a new manager get behind him.

There's definitely been a notable reduction in my "oh we've conceded a corner, they're going to score then" reaction to Everton lately.

When the Huddersfield one went in, it was pretty much getting to the point where most opposition set pieces were ending up in the net.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think we've actually conceded one since then.

We've looked a lot better since although two notable exeptions:

- Leicester, last minute header wide (Schneiderlin completely switched off)
- Palace, against the bar

I don't think it's a management issue, though. They've clearly worked on a system and it just took a bit of time for the players to adapt.

I think we can see from those isolated incidents that it's now more boiling down to players just switching off at those key moments. It's hard to legislate for that.

I'm not saying Silva will be blameless if we start shipping loads from set pieces again, but there's only so much you can do to prevent another person not doing their job.

I honestly don't think anyone is guaranteed a place, Dave. They have to perform well to play, simple as that, and it's the way it should be.

I think Bernard is probably a player who, in tight games, will have to play central or if not, be the sub that can come on and turn a tight game (a bit like Lookman). The fact we've got so many options is great.
Maybe, but he has to try and avoid sulks. I reckon if Walcott for one wasn't getting a lot of game time as an automatic starter he'd be unhappy.

There has also been a reduction in "oh we've got a corner, the opposition are somehow going to counter straight from this and score"..

I'm not sure if it was just because it was Zaha but for every corner on Sunday we had Gueye and Coleman near the half way line and there also seemed to be one or two waiting just outside the box (I noticed Digne there when Siggy was taking one). A few times earlier in the season we looked wide open off the back of our own corner (Fulham had the one on one Pickford saved off the back of one) so it's refreshing to see it looks like it's been addressed.
