What country are you from? We never had Italian football in the uk til the early 90s
Ireland

Maradona was the player everyone was talking about - happy memories watching epic players, not like the over paid dead wood we see in the 21st century (not just at Everton btw, I wont even go into snake agents like Raiola)

Serie A was the league to play in then, awash with the best on the planet and Maradona was easily the standout of them all

Rte 2 used to show a highlights show on a Monday night 1 game usually and goals from the rest of the games. Martin Tyler used to do the commentary. This is pre channel 4 and th4 advent or Gazza etc.

Scifo
Ruben Sosa
Caereca
Gullit
Van Basten
Baggio
Fracescoli
Alemao
Vialli
Mancini
Mathaus

And no, I don't think we will see someone like Maradona again - particularly when you see the stuff he done on football pitches that Margate town play on pretty much all the time back then - he was unstoppable, Imagine if he was playing on a golf green.

In fact, in Ireland we had Italian Football on Sky Channel in 1986/87. Sky Channel was the precursor to BSkyB - and it was a pan-European broadcaster from the Netherlands. It was available on cable TV in Ireland.

Martin Tyler was commentator and the programme was produced by CSI International. They also did Dutch Football on a Tuesday night and Spanish Football for Barcelona's home games - with Lineker - every two weeks on a Wednesday. This was the Sky era of WWF Wrestlemania III and DJ Kat.

In the first season, we saw Maradona and Napoli win their first title up against Platini at Juventus, Rummenigge at Inter, and Boniek at Roma. Halcyon days. As you say, RTE then took it for the second half of the 1989/90 season before Italia 90 - and we saw Napoli win again.
