Not sure if you are all aware but there is a few protests about this week about people on JSA benefit, being forced to do voluntary work placements or have their JSA stopped.
The idea of this is to get the unemployed people something to sell themselves with on their CV rather than just having no work experience or large gaps in work history.

Is it fair to make people do some work to get their benefits???

I am not going to express my opinions yet, just interested in what other peoples opinions are!

Pretty sure this was covered when that girl won a legal case when being "forced" to work at Poundland.

"Is it fair to make people do some work to get their benefits?"

IMO, taking a broad brush approach will always throw up problems. The easy answer to your question is Yes, but, every household and case is different, so some latitude should be included.

Depends on what the work is and whether it's actually going to be useful experience.

But, broadly speaking, the answer is Yes ... though I didn't think anyone was, strictly speaking, being forced and thought the Poundland case became an issue because she'd agreed to do something but didn't see the point of working at Poundland, especially cos she was doing voluntary work ( in a museum I think ? ) anway.

Agree with this - it's not a 'one-size-fits-all' solution, but the principle is right.

There's a lad being forced off our college course after the best part of a year because of this. Very unfair IMO.

Yes the issue was raised when she won the right to do nothing and still get her benefit's. Next week as a knock on effect of her victory some lazy unemployed people have found the energy to protest about being forced to earn their benefits.

Ok I admit it I think its wrong that peopkle are allowed to do sod all to help them get a job and still get their 'Job Seekers Allowance' not LBA 'Lazy Bastards Allowance'

When I was out of work I did voluntary work off my own back and it helped me big time to have a change in career, So why should some people just be allowed to live on the money the employed people pay them through tax and just play on their xbox all day without making any effort!!

I also know that their is a massive percentage of the unemployed that work very hard to get back into work asap!! So I aint dissing all the unemployed at all!!

Its a if the cap fits wear it moment for me!!

I agree but he shouldn't have been on JSA though if he wasn't seeking a job, Surely???

Possibly not, but it's a bit of money to help him out while trying to improve his situation. Him getting an education and going to uni is more beneficial for everyone than him working in pound land.

If someone is on JSA for a long period, has no health issues and has basically just refused to take work then yes they should be forced to do this

I would think after 2-3 weeks of working a 30-40 hour week for nothing but the benefits they are claiming they might just go out and find better paid work

Those already in voluntary employment are being forced to give it up to enroll on the scheme in question, that was what the recent court case was about. The claimant in question was volunteering at a local museum, which was the sector she intended to find work in, she was forced to leave that to work at Poundland(?) instead to satisfy the requirements for her JSA.

Yeah true, cos if nobody worked in retail outlets. It wouldn't matter as all shops would manage without staff!!

Maybe he should have been looking for a part time job that fitted in with him being at college??? Maybe even a poundland job, lol

The other side of this is should people be forced to do any type of work?

If I weren't starting my own thing I'd be looking in a very small pool for jobs that my experience, quals and intelligence are suitable for.

What's a UNI grad getting out of stacking shelves in poundland?

THIS. Different story if there's no jobs out there, but there is. Propping all these useless idiots costs the rest of us too much.

Whoever thought of this is the SubContinental Speilbergo.
