Not a fan of KL, been there twice and left pretty quickly, but Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang is pretty amazing and the beach at Batu Ferenghi (sp) is OK. There's enough in Penang to keep you occupied for a few days. I remember watching the derby when Andy Van Der Shandy got sent off in a bar there.

Malacca is interesting for it's colonial history, you can see the Dutch, British and Portuguese influences quite evidently.

I'd head for Pulau Langkawi or Pulau Perhentian myself, providing the weather is right.

The Cameron Highlands are quite interesting if you find British Colonial history interesting, all tea plantations and mock-tudor architecture. Not on your itinerary I know, but I quite liked it up there and it's sort of between KL and Penang.

Thanks for the info mate.
Its like a student exchange programme Ill be going on so Ill be staying in University Halls over there in KL. Then we'll be moving along to Penang and Malacca whenever they plan it for.

Its apparantly really cheap so Im looking at taking £800 for the three weeks think thats around 3,000 of their currency.

Lots to see in KL:

Petronas Towers - very good science museum in there for the kids
Menara KL Tower - worlds 5th tallest building - great views from observation deck
Batu Caves - over 400 million years old
Little India - fantastic food markets and great indian food
Chow Kit Wet Market
Merdeka Square and KL Railway Station

Penang is one of my favourite places in Asia - Georgetown is now a world heritage centre, but the most famous thing about Penang is it's street food - don't eat at night in the hotel but go to almost any of the hawker centres for dinner - Gurney Drive is best place to head for. Interesting places all over Georgetown, Penang's little India has fantastic food, and try the coffee shops for breakfast. Batu Ferrenghi is not that great to be honest, a couple of nice hotels but the beach is not worth the trip.

Not been to Malacca for over 20 years so can't really comment.

Visited KL in '97 and loved the place. The people were great, kind and welcoming and they made the visit for us. The food was great which was good because we did not find a gregs. The trips already mentioned are good get to the temples early if you can. Like London, avoid the crouds.

Have fun out there!

It'll be my first time in Asia only ever stuck to Europe and North America so didn't really know what to expect. The info has been a great help, thanks. How expensive is alcohol over there? I wouldn't be getting hammered just a few to budget for a night.

Not sure on the price (depends on what you drink) - local beers definitely cheaper than imported which have heavy duty - if you are on a budget, almost every bar does a "Happy Hour" early in the evening. Tiger brewed in Singapore is probably the best of the local lagers...

Went down from Singapore to Malacca , Cameron Highlands, Penang and KL en route to Thailand in 95.

Was Ramadan but we had no probs getting grub. Roast Dinners and Tea & Scones up in the Highlands (and Big Duncs Shirt off against Man Utd, in a place full of malaysian utd fans). Coppers were a bit of a pain tbh. kept coming searching your stuff in the backpackers for Da-Da, bit of a religious revolution thing going on then as well so they were dubious about you sharing rooms with your bird as well if not married.
In Penang I stayed in the worst place of my entire travels, and I'm including Floors, Ferries, Trains, Car Parks and a ditch in that, The Eng Aun Hotel, they've built a new one there now apparently, mice dashing under the walls between rooms all night, and all kinds of critters on the bed, of the blood feeding variety, they werent just insects either, the place was mingin.

Go to Snake Temple in Penang, get Green Pit Vipers draped all over you, and \i mean like a dozen of them.

I remember the Highlands just being a cool retreat from the tropical heat, wasnt a great deal to do as i remember ?

Go for a stroll, afternoon tea and scones, all very colonial days gone by tbh.

There is a bar.. looks like a pirate ship.. its boss..
Other than that, Langkawi is off the scale good.. and Penang is very good also..

Malacca is really dodgy now, lots of bag snatching, mugging etc.
The shopkeepers tell all the tourists to keep bags away from the roadside cos the theives ride past on motorbikes and grab the bags, pity cos its a very nice place lots of history but got to be on your toes.

Kl you want to stay around the centre....KLCC area (big mall) by petronas towers....another mall begins with P...cant remember the name.......bars / restaurants etc all in malls there...

Night for some creatures to look at go to the 'Beach Club' bar....also have a fantastic indian (but their waiters are dumb so you have to order 2ce as they sometimes bring out the wrong dish)....about 5mins taxi from KLCC,

I'm there once a month but usually try and go in and out.....800 quid is about 1600 SGD so 3000 MYR approx...ok hooker will cost you 10% of that....
