Mafia II

Having played both, Mafia 2 is streets ahead.

It seems that way, but you can see the parallels.

I thought the in-world city detail of Mafia 2 was incredible, but apparently it is criminally underused.

The city of GTA4 was well utilised with it's random encounters etc. Is there none of that in Mafia?

I might just play it safe and wait for Fallout Vegas....

I hate GTA, but I see your point. I've read that Mafia is too linear, in that respect.

Get Red Dead Redemption if you want some more of that! GTA in the Wild West... Can't go wrong with that combination!

Mafia II, stealing you pension and calling it fighting those that opposed you stealing their day to day living?
Pardon me, 'wrong' thread, is this anything like 'the Godfather' game?

I was looking forward to it, but the demo was very poor.

And the reviews have pointed out that it's got an awful checkpoint system (ie, if you die, you go WAY back and have to do the monotonous mission starting bits again + unskippable cutscenes). That's something that really gets on my tits.

The story sounds great, but the frustration factor is clearly evident. I think I'll pass until it's cheap.

Yeah, I won't judge a game entirely on its demo (I adored the Brutal Legend demo, hated the game. I thought the Arkham Asylum demo was very boring, but the game itself was phenomenal), but I wasn't keen on the controls (walking or vehicle). That's something you can gauge from a demo.

For the record, I hate GTA. So I wasn't comparing it to that in any way, just in case anyone might have been thinking that. Contrary to popular belief, GTA isn't the pinnacle of sandbox games or storytelling. Far from it.

I actually got round to playing and beating Mafia 2 the other month. It really exceeded my expectations.

Admittedly I died a lot (over 30 times on normal difficulty!), and in infuriating ways (driving along at a bit of speed, and bumping a tiny bollard with one wheel seems to result in the odd insta-death...), and I had to replay sections and redo driving bits due to the dumb checkpoint system, but other than that the gameplay was solid.

The little annoyances didn't tarnish the experience too much, because the story was marvellous, the voice acting even better and the characters were well written and highly entertaining... it really was what I'd always wanted GTA to be. They really nailed the setting and the era too.

Highly recommended. Especially now you'll be able to get it on the cheap! :)

Weird that you posted this. I started it again the other day. Just as fun as I remembered it, and now I'm gonna try and get all the trophies and the playboy mags!!

Glad you enjoyed it too.

I don't think I knew about the playboy mags when I first picked one up in the game. I was just like... ooh, what's this?

BAM - 60 YEAR OLD BOOBIES

Nice.

Seriously though, it's an ace game. I do hope they make a Mafia 3, though. I won't be happy if the ending to 2 is the ending to the series.

I really liked the original Mafia, do they have the same feel? Might check if I can find it on the cheap.
