Mafia II

Bought this today (for £8!!!).

Quite like it. It's all happy and nice at the moment, but reckon it's gonna get all dark later!
Love the New York accents on the characters.

Reccomended

I was looking forward to it, but the demo was very poor.

And the reviews have pointed out that it's got an awful checkpoint system (ie, if you die, you go WAY back and have to do the monotonous mission starting bits again + unskippable cutscenes). That's something that really gets on my tits.

The story sounds great, but the frustration factor is clearly evident. I think I'll pass until it's cheap.

I thought the demo was ok, but then it is only a demo and not the final cut.

I thought the demo was a bit duff too. But thought i'd give it a punt. It's defo worth the £8 i paid for it, but i undestand where you're coming from.
I'm sure it will be nearer the £25 mark in a few weeks.

I havnt died as yet (dead easy at the start) so dunno about that problem. I'm enjoying it so far.

Oh and the soundtrack is totally immensely ace!

Yeah, I won't judge a game entirely on its demo (I adored the Brutal Legend demo, hated the game. I thought the Arkham Asylum demo was very boring, but the game itself was phenomenal), but I wasn't keen on the controls (walking or vehicle). That's something you can gauge from a demo.

For the record, I hate GTA. So I wasn't comparing it to that in any way, just in case anyone might have been thinking that. Contrary to popular belief, GTA isn't the pinnacle of sandbox games or storytelling. Far from it.

Just done an awesome bit in this where it all goes a bit Shawshank Redemption.

Seriously after playing through a fair bit of this I'd have to recommend it despite some dodgy reviews I've seen.
Controls aren't amazing, but the story and general atmosphere of the game is perfect.

Finished in less than a week and I have a full time job and a soap obsessed girlfriend who always gets the tv!

However, I'd still reccomend it. The story is amazing (if short).

The ending is so very very weird though!

I was torn between this and a couple of others. The controls on the demo seemed a bit guff, did they change them?

Has anyone played Kane & Lynch 2? Wasn't convinced by this either.

The controls aren't great if I'm being honest. Driving is fine but when you are walking around the camera is all over the place. However, the shooting and hiding behind something system is fine.
Really want other people to buy this so I can talk about the end to someone about it!! Seriously just for the story it's worth it.

As for Kane and Lynch the demo was a bit dodgy. Didn't like the first one either.

I have Kane and Lynch 1. Fantastic, in terms of plot, character and so on. TERRIBLE game. The controls are everywhere. The AI is incredibly stupid.

Kane and Lynch 2 was their chance to make it a competent game, so the story had the platform it deserved. I played the demo, and read loads of reviews, and it seems they failed spectacularly again. I might buy it when it's dirt cheap, but for now, no thanks.

It actually sounds like Mafia 2 and Kane and Lynch have a lot in common; good story, characters, universe and so on. Poor controls, and sloppy execution.

Having played both, Mafia 2 is streets ahead.

I thought the in-world city detail of Mafia 2 was incredible, but apparently it is criminally underused.

The city of GTA4 was well utilised with it's random encounters etc. Is there none of that in Mafia?

I might just play it safe and wait for Fallout Vegas....
