It's one that's always going to divide opinion, and I can definatly see both sides of the argument.
Just personally I think it would be more constructive let him return to work as part of his rehabilitation (having already done a lengthy spell in jail aswell lets not forget, although maybe not long enough for some I know). Jail is about rehabilitation than punishment. Obviously some people commit horrendous, premedated and evil crimes who can never be let out, not nessessarily for punishment (although that does come into it) but because they would still be a threat to society. I dont think this is the case for Mr. McCormick. He will live with this for the rest of his life. His life has been ruined. But i do believe the constructive thing is to let him out after the three years and let him try and rebuild some sort of a life. It is a waste of taxpayers money to have him in jail longer, as the jail term really isn't serving a purpose to anyone. I know it's a sensitive subject, and the family of the 2 kids I'm sure feel different, but sometimes you've gotta step back from an un effected position (i.e not involved with either party) and think about what's best for society. The tragedy has happened, nothing can be done about that now. What he does now with his life moving on can maybe affect the future for the positive. I'm sure he will be involved with all kinds of programmes to spread awareness and if he prevents just 1 similar case by talking about his experiences then that would be a positive thing. He wouldnt be able to that from a jail cell.
