Long Read : How modern football became broken beyond repair

Let's not confuse 'lower standard' for more passionate, more exciting and more competitive.
The Championship is infinitely more exciting than the Premier League. Look at this season for example. After 75% of the season played, every club has either a chance of going up or going down.
Try telling any of their fans that their league is less enjoyable.

Watched the EFL on Quest the other night, some brilliant goals.

Great post FB and I like your thinking, especially about the 'proper rivalries', as opposed to the invented Sky TV rivalries.
I for one wouldn't look forward to away trips all over Europe every fortnight; I couldn't afford it for a start!
On the other hand, trips to places like Villa, Forest, Leeds and the north east do appeal to me as, in my opinion, that's the bread and butter of our game.
Perhaps those left behind would take the FA Cup a bit more seriously too.
The more I think about this, the more a breakaway league without us appeals to me.
At the risk of repeating myself, good riddance to 'The Sky Six'.
Yes, the Big Six comments seem to have mysteriously disappeared lately

One thing I would like to see is the hierarchy of the Premier League getting tough with the 'rebels' and saying something like this;
"if you want to sod off and form a 'super league's (chuckle, chuckle) then don't just talk about it; go and do it. But remember this. There'll be no entry back into our league when you're tired of playing with your new friends."
That won't happen of course as the PL will appease them with yet more cash, from the pockets of Sky, BT and Amazon viewers.

It is depressing. Richard Scudamore said in an interview last year (article below), that he wanted a regular rotation of the premier league title to make the PL the premier brand in the world. He wants that rotation among the top 6 and nobody else, despite what he says in the article. Leicester will never happen again. The current model is to eliminate the highs and lows, the pitches are like snooker tables it's almost a non contact sport. We now have VAR which is meant to make it more fair but is doing the opposite. Spurs name was mentioned in that article several times, they are considered a bigger brand than Man City. City were robbed in the CL semi last year and Spurs this year along with the RS get the majority of VAR decisions in their favour. The game is corrupt.
I love Everton I will never forget the first time I went to Goodison, will never forget the heroes we had, the games we lost and won, the highs and the lows. There was nothing more exciting than going to a field like the Baseball Ground watching a scrap, especially when we won. The game has been stolen from the working classes.

Many of them rely on the champions league to bring in money.

Values of teams left in the prem would plummet, wages would drop, all of the best players would leave.
It would essentially be like the championship.
Exactly. The massive tv deals would obviously be redirected to the superleague leaving slim pickings in the domestic leagues. The English top flight would be like the Championship.
At the same time I think the clubs pushing for this are killing the hen that lays the golden eggs.

The article states there was a mid 80s change to gate distribution, with home teams receiving a bigger proportion. Did it used to be 50/50 split for home and away teams?

I agree mate let them have there super league ,I honestly believe most match going fans of the so called top six would soon get bored of playing the same super rich clubs.
For me English football died with the introduction of the premier league.
I see this often but it's before my time. Why did the Premier League change what the Division 1 was?

Biggest difference I can see is the the PL negotiate tv deals, make competition rules etc for the PL only, while the FA continue to do that for the other divisions.

Very simple examples are minimum stadium standards for PL which are not mandated by FA, also pitch size is regulated by PL, while FA just go with FIFA regulations.

I wouldn't agree that it killed football or anything, unless there are some other major changes I am not aware of
