Put another way: the draws were at Goodison, yes. It isn't going to be easy there and I have us as distant second favourites, but we can get something there if they dont get a couple of goals up by the final stages.
This is an extraordinary derby: one false move from them and their PL title aspirations can be in the bin; we're fighting for our lives.
That has to affect the situation.
The Bottomless Toffee BarrellThoroughly expecting a terrible drubbing. This season everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Every time we think we’ve finally scraped the bottom of the barrel, the splinters open up to reveal an even deeper layer of the barrel and then another... The only thing I can categorically rule out on Sunday is any form of positive outcome whatsoever. If we get so much as a point here after what we’ve endured all year, it should rank alongside Ronnie Radford knocking Newcastle out of the Cup in the 70s.
Good summary. Spot on.I do think if we get to half time at 0-0 they will be bricking it a little. I’d then expect a quite relentless 15 minutes post half time from them which could maybe fizzle out to frustration. A red friend of mine has always said to me that his biggest fear about the derby is us costing them something massive. The draw at Goodison a few years ago being a perfect example of this. Whilst it was great to win last season, it was at an empty ground against a side in a terrible run of form and the result didn’t really mean anything to either of our seasons. Picking up something on Sunday would be absolutely monumental and emotionally devastating for them.
The results we’ve managed to accrue do also mean that losing on Sunday isn’t really a death sentence (expected losses and all that) anymore. This keeps the pressure all on them really. We can afford to lose this game. They can’t afford anything but a win.
You are the master after all.Good summary. Spot on.
As I said: I expect this to be a routine Liverpool victory. But it's not difficult to construct a scenario where it's anything but.
They need to be two goals clear in the last minute of that game to feel relatively secure...if they're not they are going to get very edgy.
I'd put our chances of a result of some kind at no more than 10/1. The gulf is that great and home support compounds it.
City are going to be 4 points ahead of them when the derby kicks off, and they know one bad performance as a team effectively ends their title bid.
