Liverpool Universities

All these University rankings are really counterproductive in my opinion. They promote the anglo-saxon model of the elitest private university. I'm not sure that's the way forward for humanity...

One thing the university of Liverpool used to have (I was a short term research assistant, but that was 13 years ago) was an excellent international network. They put a lot of time and effort into the Erasmus programme, even hosting several conferences.

The game is the game, Davey as I am sure you know. No one gets to opt out - Shanghai ranking is hugely influential on a global scale for student movement.
Indeed. But it's all eminently, um, gameable.

As I said in my earlier post, research heavily influences position. Despite what universities parrot on about its quite often not well connected to teaching, certainly at undergraduate level. Particularly for more vocational courses.

I know of a couple of institutions who wanted to boost league tables for certain courses to attract more undergraduate students (because they're influential in this regard). So they entered subject 'unit of assesments' at the last Research Exercise Framework (REF) knowing that in research terms they were below average. But just by entering they would improve their Times Higher league table position 😆. I.e. because they had a ranking where they didn't previously.

For those who aren't familiar REF has NO bearing on teaching activity.

You have to laugh.

Anyway, that's my cynical chuckling for the day done ;)

Yes, in most cases. It’s a red brick university with a good reputation for research and whatnot, but LJMU is improving year on year.

For certain degrees, it’s better than UOL, but not most - horses for courses and all that jazz.
Exactly this. You need to drill down into the detail of individual courses, depts and the modules offered, particularly if there's a strong specialist area.

Do you think the premier league should be ranked according to games won and lost, or fan surveys on who likes their club the most?

If it's the former, try this table to see what the best universities look like. There are 8 in the UK in the top 100, one from the NW.

Nothing wrong with Lancaster, I hasten to add. Campus is too small and isolated, though, imho. Even if you love the outdoors there's nothing great on the doorstep and you're still up the M6 to the Lakes.

When I went, I think Lancaster had the worst suicide rate for international students.

I loved it but it's bleak at times isn't it.

So in terms of Liverpool itself.

Where do most of the students reside. Is it city centre halls or student housing on bus routes into town?

I was shocked it was approx 6k a year for accommodation. Shot up.

Mainly city centre purpose built student villages now days, and then the Rigsby style, old skool student houses, off the likes of Smithdown Rd.

I'd recommend living in the halls around Greenbank for at least a year. Yes, it's further out, and they'd have to add on commute time, but it's a nice place.

They would have Smithdown Road, with all the bars, within close proximity, Sefton Park and everything else nice. Plus, it's about £30-£50 a week cheaper.*

*Or it was when my daughter looked.
