Happy New Year, Toffees.

I'm going to be visiting BMD for the Man United game. I'm coming from South London: I'm not from Liverpool (my dad was) and have only visited Liverpool previously to salve the hereditary affliction bestowed by my old man by making semi-regular pilgrimages to bathe in the healing Goodison atmosphere.

Going to be up on the Sunday and spend all Monday in Liverpool. Wonder whether some kindly blues could point me in the direction of:

1. Place to stay within walking distance (30 mins, say) of BMD. If the answer is "anywhere in the city centre will do" all good;

2. Recommended things to do during the day. I'll be with the Mrs who really doesn't like the Beatles so that museum is out, but was wondering whether the Cavern might be worth popping in so I can at least bask in a bit of Fab Four Liverpool history;

3. Is it worth getting in early for a beer and wander about, see the fan bricks etc. (so far is allowed) or better keeping warm in a pub on the way (or both)?

Much obliged for the local knowledge. Love the city.

Adding to @Ray Purchase : Albert Dock or anywhere to the north is an easy walk. We stayed at Holiday Inn Express on Albert Dock and that was decent. (Avoid the Adelphi.)
Don't know if the Maritime Museum/Museum of Slavery has reopened yet but worth a visit as well.
If you are in Upper North or East walk around to South Upper, get one of the decent range of beers (Camden Stout for example), and enjoy the view of the river and city centre.

I would second the Liverpool Museum. I also like the Tate Liverpool and generally that whole area down by the docks. I also really like strolling through the old Liverpool Cathedral (and a great little pub The Grapes, near the cathedral), and the new cathedral as well. Liverpool 1 has some shops if that's your missus liking. Basically, this is what I did when I visited. We also ate a lot of steak at the Hawksmore.

Many thanks blues, that's useful and much appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing the new ground. Everything I've read on here makes it sound amazin.

The only time I ever heard my old man swear in public was at an Everton v. Man United game at Goodison when he randomly stood up and yelled at the player taking a corner "[Poor language removed] off Scholes you Manc t**t". I may well do the same to honour his memory.

The old Cathedral is nice.
Took over 100 years to build.
During the First World War, the Bishop from the Cathedral (bishop of Liverpool) his son won the Victoria cross, twice.
There has only ever been 3 people who have won it twice.
Chavasse park by John Lewis store in the City Centre is named after him.

Albert Dock is nice.
Ferry across the Mersey.
The museum and art gallery are nice, and right next to each other.
Bold street has some nice little places for a lunch or dinner.
The Stadium tour is good, £26

I stayed at The Maldron Hotel on Monday night mate and can highly recommend it. Second time I’ve stayed there, great location, modern and good breakfast choices.

2 minute walk to all major shopping and opposite John Lewis Q car park where you can get a discount if staying at the hotel and booking in advance.

Also short walking distance to cathedrals and Albert Dock and echo arena.
