Lineker explains all

I would like him more if he would have offered this type of information before now. I would have understood a bit more at least.

I must admit I was shocked when he left.
He wasn't popular when he first arrived as he replace Andy Gray, a hero. After a while once he was banging them in we saw what he could do and warmed to him. Ironically we never won anything that season.
My favourite memory of him was when he scored at the Kop end, I was standing in the Kop in the "blue section" We did them 2 nil, I remember going utterly berserk...
For that memory alone I love the man.

Whilst I really don't like the personna he adopts on BBC MOTD, having met him more than once in real life he seems a very genuine guy.

How much is spin? who knows? All I know is we would have been a better side for longer had we held onto him for a few more seasons.

One of the greatest footballing memories I have is being present at Wembley when he scored against the RS - shame we lost on the day :(

up next: Gary Speed please.

He was forced out to make money. Horses mouth!!! He was told not to turn up for the coach to an away game and then it was leaked to the press that he didn't turn up and wanted out. He is a boyhood Blue that loved playing for us and now the abuse he gets is terrible.

Does anyone else remember Lineker on Wogan and he was talking about moving to Barca. He slipped into the conversation that the bid was accepted in February!!! Unbelievable.

Was 9 when he played for us, was truely heartbroked when he left and never knew the reasons why, even if I was told, a 9 year old could never understand. He was my boyhood hero, even so much that I had a Barca shirt with his number on it.

i may have got this wrong, but i always assumed that howard kendall sold him to barca expecting to follow him there a while later, except that el tel decided that he wasnt leaving after all and that bolloxd howards big plan.
there again, howard would not have left if we hadnt got banned from europe. therefore lineker wouldnt have left either ! so that something else we can hate the rs for

So its all Kendall and Carters fault. One more reason to be pissed off with them. Was that the moment the rot started? After 18 months of pleasure, the writing was then on the wall.

I always asumed it was we didnt have much cash and that was why we got rid of him if memory serves the only cash siging we made that summer was big dave watson for 900k and paul power on a free

That being said i always got the feeling Howard would have buggered off to join him at barca if he'd have had the chance.
