Legal prostitution policy idea of Lib Dems, why its a bad idea.

As an aside something that should be introduced to these shores is the porno cabins you see on the continent. What with the High Street in meltdown a few handily placed sex shops could be just the thing for the local economy

I dunno, its like the same argument with drugs. Make it legal and stop it from going underground/ funding crime.

But then there's the ethical thing about being a country that tolerates drugs and prostitution. It's a tricky one.

I think legal or illegal, prostitution wont change much. You'll still get the brothels where the girls are reasonably well looked after, usually by an older woman who looks after them. I WAS 18 FFS DONT JUDGE ME.

On the flip side, you'll still get the smackheads walking around on the street legally or illegally, putting themselves at risk.

To sum up, I dont think it would change much.

great post nik.

People don't rape for sexual gratification. it's about power. It's an entirely different debate.

For me taking it from the street and having some kind of control of the industry with minimum standards needs to happen just so you have access points for medical help, both physical and mental, and to remove the influence of pimps and drug dealers on the people who chose to do it.

.

I'm not a psychologist but I'm fairly sure it's a bit more complicated than that. I don't know any of the theory but it strikes me that random oddball loner guy who gets his oats away every Friday afternoon on his way back from Tesco is less likely to warp into a depraved rapist. For what it's worth, at that legalised brothel he could have a standing order with Betsy the 25yr old 'stunna' to act out some sick fantasy every week.

This thread is desperately in need of some pictures, maybe pics of prostitutes in countries where it is legal and ones from countries where it is still illegal. Its the only way we are going to be able to make an informed decision!

The current legal position in this country is vague anyway. My nearest town (Lutterworth) has one of the country's biggest brothels right on the High Street. It advertises openly on the internet and has a sign on the front of it. Neither the police nor the local Council do a thing about it.

Rather than throwing hookers and johns into jail I think anyone who believes in prohibition should be thrown in jail for crimes against humanity. If you believe in prohibition you believe in organized crime, torture and murder. Criminals love prohibition.

Legalising the sex business reniforces the idea that sex is a commoidty, one you should buy if noone gives it to you. You are breeding rapists, in the same way trade breeds shoplifters.
This is a wind-up surely. Trade breeds shoplifters? I'm reasonably sure there are studies that instances of rape are lower where prostitution is legal but don't have time to Google right now. It's legal in lots of places though so there should be lots of studies about rape increasing where it's legal.

We don't want drugs, so it's ilegal to use them as well as sell them.
Not sure if serious here. I feel like you might just be doing a Colbert. If not: your argument for sex trade prohibition is drug prohibition? The most expensive disaster of law the western world has ever conceived is a "pro" not a "con"? http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5g9C6x99EnFVdFuXw_B8pvDRzLqcA

But with prostitution we're trying to stop it without ever actually making it ilegal to buy sex. Of course we're not going to have any effect when the consumers have no reason to stop consuming.
This would be a semi-valid argument if not for the fact there are other countries in the world.

Nobody has ever seriously tried to make it go away. We have never in this country ever made it ilegal to solicit a prostitute. You're writing something off as impossible that's never even been attempted.
Likely because that person is aware of the planet earth extending beyond the boundaries of England. It's been illegal in lots of places (most places) for pretty much the entirety of modern society. Prohibition has failed for literally centuries all over the world. What makes England in 2013 so likely to succeed where everyone else (aside from perhaps insane religious dictatorships which stone women to death for being raped) has failed? Prohibition does not work. It's never worked. It will never work. I think people who aren't afraid of facts and evidence are starting to realize that (hence the, albeit slow, dismantling of prohibition around the western world).

Do you believe alcohol should be illegal?

Edit: In retrospect you must be popcorning but there are people who think that way so my points hold for them.

There was a drive through one on the outskirts of Amsterdam, near of all places Sloterdijk, there was a road that looped at the end with basically bus stops with a bird in each, then there was a car park with screens between the spaces. I know of someone that got a taxi driver to take him there, he'd been on his motorbike previously, same guy thought nothing of 'going in' when we were walking round Amsterdam and my Mrs was with us.
