Sophistication and variations of are actually a very old insult. (2000+ years)
From the Greek; Sophis- to make false.
It is a word misused by so many over such a long time that people take it as meaning something else trendy and modern!
Similarly with nostalgia. 'To look back with nostalgia' is not supposed to mean to look back with fondness.
The translation of nostalgia means the pain of memory. Something different again.
Moron. Literally the first result from google is opposite:
"The Greek word sophist (sophistēs) derives from the words sophia and sophos, which had meant "wisdom" or “wise” (respectively) since the time of Homer. The words were originally used to describe expertise in a particular knowledge or craft."
Just found this probs from the same source...
A sophism is a specious argument for displaying ingenuity in reasoning or for deceiving someone.
A sophist is a person who reasons with clever but fallacious and deceptive arguments.
Read a good book this year called "Against Empathy", a whole book dedicated to reasons why empathy (feeling what you think someone else is feeling, he makes a lot of the fact he isn't talking about cognitive empathy) on the whole actually hinders our ability to do good and is a poor moral guide. Part of it comes down to the fact that empathy is something you can only hold for a small number of people and the tunnel vision makes you miss the wider picture.Compassion and Empathy. It feels like everyone and his dog must not only display compassion and empathy but also wear some sort of badge to reinforce the message. Woe betide anyone who doesn't go out of their way to overtly signal their standing. The recent National Trust directive to wear rainbow gay pride badges being the most recent.......

Though he does bang the compassion drum so bit of a mixed bag for you there.

It certainly is mate.It is so nice to have a decent conversation on here for once!
Definitely too much lip service to certain concepts like, as you say, compassion and empathy.Haha. I do believe though that true compassion is based not on an ability to make the right sounds but on an ability to do the right things. An issue can be dealt with if approached correctly, empathising to the n'th degree just tries to look good but achieves nothing.......
