Not a big fan of courage and sophistication myself.

Sophistication and variations of are actually a very old insult. (2000+ years)
From the Greek; Sophis- to make false.

It is a word misused by so many over such a long time that people take it as meaning something else trendy and modern!

Similarly with nostalgia. 'To look back with nostalgia' is not supposed to mean to look back with fondness.

The translation of nostalgia means the pain of memory. Something different again.

Always hated the way people say they admire someone for their courage or their intelligence. Only find them admirable traits if they're used for good.

Similarly when we start calling every Tom, Dick and Harry a hero.
Sportsmen should not be called heroes as such, maybe icons, stars, superstars.

Heroes are the brave people who died saving others, fighting for others.
Not people who win a trophy for a football team. Just my own opinion.

* See the filter removed a perfectly reasonable word from a popular saying!*

You have to take into account the difference between etymology/original meaning and actual meaning.

I'm not too much of a purist personally. I think it's we who should shape/change language to suit us. Not be slaves to an original definition. Lots of words have changed over the centuries.

I believe the word 'naughty' was a synonym of 'evil' in the middle ages. A far cry from the bland word we use to describe a 3 year old who's just scrawled on the living room wall in crayon.

It is so nice to have a decent conversation on here for once!

Compassion and Empathy. It feels like everyone and his dog must not only display compassion and empathy but also wear some sort of badge to reinforce the message. Woe betide anyone who doesn't go out of their way to overtly signal their standing. The recent National Trust directive to wear rainbow gay pride badges being the most recent.......
