As @Bruce Wayne said, it is neuter. For example, das Mädchen ('the girl') - somewhat confusing but diminutives take the neuter and 'chen' is a diminutive, as is 'lein'. (Würstchen - small sausage, Schatzilein - little treasure, used as an endearment). In this case, Mädchen apparently comes from 'Magd' (a maiden).

Added: not sure if this is purely Tyrolean or Austrian, but adding an 'l' can also be a diminutive (e.g. 'Spatzl' - little sparrow - another endearment).

Ah cool I'm thinking of moving that way. Will take me a while to sort myself out though. I'm in a town called pinoso about 40m west inland. I'm going to look at renting an Airbnb for a few days a month in or near Alicante city as I'm too isolated out here

Haha. When I was getting married back in 1994, my late parents flew in with my sister and my auntie. At the time I was living in Alicante itself, in 'calle Pinoso' (for those watching in black and white, that's 'Pinoso street'). So they get a taxi at the airport and my dad nonchalantly says 'Pinoso, porfavor'.
After about half an hour into the journey he realises something is not quite right and they manage to get through to the driver that they wanted to go to Pinoso street in Alicante city, not Pinoso town in Alicante province.

Cost him a good few thousand pesetas that one.
