As @Bruce Wayne said, it is neuter. For example, das Mädchen ('the girl') - somewhat confusing but diminutives take the neuter and 'chen' is a diminutive, as is 'lein'. (Würstchen - small sausage, Schatzilein - little treasure, used as an endearment). In this case, Mädchen apparently comes from 'Magd' (a maiden).I started learning French at a young age and agree about the shared vocabulary.
Only did a bit of German in school so don’t know anything substantial. What is the third gender out of interest? Could you give an example?
Added: not sure if this is purely Tyrolean or Austrian, but adding an 'l' can also be a diminutive (e.g. 'Spatzl' - little sparrow - another endearment).
