It doesn't come across as looking good mate, and I can remember him getting slated by the Barca fans in one of the games he did play where they got battered 5 - 1 by Villarreal. He has looked okayish IMO for us when he has played, hopefully we get to see this season what type of player Mina is going to be for us.

????

I don’t think this ever happened mate.

Ha ha. You think he won't make it in the premier league because he had a poor game against Man City away. I think he only started 6 games mate all season, in which we conceded 6 goals and had 3 clean sheets. 4 of those 6 games were away to City, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea, who just happened to finish in the champions league places.

As I said in my last post, the lad was beset by injuries and never managed to get himself up to speed with match fitness. He was also new to he premier league, a well known graveyard for inexperienced defenders.

Give your head a wobble.
No he started 10 games, with 3 clean sheets and 12 conceded. I think the games you mention suited him because we defended a bit deeper to limit space in behind and he did well generally. He was less good in games against Watford and Brighton when there was more onus on us to push up the pitch. I have no idea how good Mina can be for us but I find the insistence by some people that he's absolutely amazing and we looked better with him playing last year to be weird. He was - at best - decent last year. He can be given plenty of leeway because he's quite young, new to the league and had injuries, but there was definitely plenty to be a little bit concerned about in his games last year.

This seems bang on to me and completely agree with it

There seems to be an irrational bias here towards Mina? He certainly seems a likable / colourful guy but important to be objective...

Did you think he was very impressive against Man City away?

Why wasn't he picked ahead of Keane / Zouma when fit?

I think certainly when he came in from Barca I'd thought he'd become a first choice. However, also heard from Barca fans that he was inconsistent there, in a weaker league

Hopefully given time he'll stay injury free, get a few games and live up to the potential...
Irrational?. So in other words we're all wrong and you're right?

City away was his poorest game and he wasn't that great in it. But it seems to me that you are judging him based on that one game you saw him in, away from home against arguably the best club team in the world who frequently make a habit of dismantling teams defences. He was excellent in the away games against Liverpool and Chelsea.

He was injured for large parts of the season. I think he only started around 8 games on the bench and came on in 5 of those. In those games he was either returning from injury or was part of squad rotation over the Christmas period (interesting that you don't mention Spurs at home, a game he sat out). Do you think Silva should replace a partnership that had been doing well to bring and risk somebody returning from injury? No he shouldn't. Mina took Zouma's place for the Chelsea away game and didn't get his place back for 4 games when he was rested over the Xmas period.

I don't know about his time at Barca as I don't watch Spanish football.

Hopefully he will stay injury free and get more accustomed to the Premier league. We agree on that at least :)

Could of sworn I remember reading about it him playing in a game Barca got tonked in, maybe it wasn't Villarreal then mate, saying that though, I have been known too be wrong on many an occasion.
Believe you're thinking of the Levante game - more dodgy articles on the subject:

I'll refer you to Jimmy K's post above which is seeing reality in my view. Right - will step back now from this topic...

Cheers mate, I knew there was one game where they had conceded a fair few that Mina played in, and he got a torrid time of the Barca fans.

Definitely - but based on that are you saying you'd throw him in as cast iron first choice centre back?

That is the case with many other players in the team - Richarlison, Gomes, Pickford etc - straight on the team sheet

This guy was expected to be one of those, but it's not the case

Anyway, I'll stop banging on about this - but another centre half certainly appears to be required as a priority. Let's revisit in a few weeks...
I don't have a problem with Mina being a regular starter. However I don't like the idea of anybody being a cast iron first choice because they need to be kept on their toes. So we need 3 quality CBs and a young back up. We need at least 4 quality attacking players for the 3 positions, and we need at least 4 quality midfielders for those 3 positions. Again with young back up players like Davies and DCL.

At the moment we're lacking a 3rd quality defender and a fourth quality forward player, preferably a left footed right winger. get those in and we're well set for the season ahead.

Nobody is saying that Mina has to be a guaranteed starter next season. The issue is, that article you linked, and by all accounts endorsed, was basically saying that mina had been found out by the premier, that we were now looking to offload him, and United were being praised for dodging a bullet. That's why you've had this reaction.
