I think it is clever business from Everton considering they are one of the few clubs intelligent enough to take advantage of the Greek melt-down.

I mean to say, certain clubs in Greece have self destructed or are on the verge..Iraklis/AEK/ Volou/Kavala.. and there is some definite talent in Greece that would usually be too expensive and too risky to invest in - talent that can not evolve the way it would if it was nurtured in the prem or la liga.

I truly doubt Moyes will play this guy, perhaps as often as an eclipse.. but you are getting him so cheap..it doesn't matter. I mean you can build a very nice reserve side/uefa cup 11 of Greeks who are actually quite good!

Personally, if I was Everton, I would save up and buy Fetfatzidis or Ninis and put all other transfers on hold. These players really are rotting in Greece as they are already better than 95% of the players in the country and are easily good enough to play in la Liga.

Either way, good business by Everton here. Any thread stating Everton are poorly run, these two Greeks have already made you a profit and they have not been sold yet. If Moyes had played Vellios twice as much as he has so far this season, I recon Vellios would already be worth about 3 mil to another club.

BBC have confirmed what everyone's been saying in the thread

Everton have agreed a £500,000 deal with AEK Athens for their Greek defender Kostas Manolas.

The Toffees have also agreed personal terms with the 20-year-old centre-back.

However, the transfer is on standby as Everton wait to see how much of their transfer budget might be taken up by the prospective signing of striker Nikica Jelavic from Rangers.

AEK are keen to sell Greece Under-21 international Manolas in January as he is out of contract in the summer.

They also have financial difficulties and are ready to listen to offers for their best players.

I think this one is for the future. Distin and Jags are first choice, but Distin wont last forever. That leaves Jags and Heitinga, buy Heitinga is used when cover is needed in midfield. So hes never considered the permanant choice.

That leaves Jags looking for a long term partner. With Duffy doing well and possibly the longterm solution, then there is always a back up needed. Thats where this guy fits in. Part of a long term plan.

According to the press in Greece, AEK have agreed to sell Manolas for 500k. The player on the other hand has yet to agree to personal terms with Everton. Apparently he is keen to test the market as a free agent come the summer in the hope that he could negotiate the best deal for himself.

Looks likely but it's not done...

Initial offer of 500k was rejected as the player is part owned by an agent. Everton have gone back with any improved offer of 1.5 million. (600,000 Euro upfront with additional clauses of 400,000 euro once Manolas plays 20 games and 500,000 euro once he has reached 40.

AEK may decide to try and keep the player by offering him one last contract in the hope of convincing him to stay.

Duffy looks the business, Jags & Heitinga got a minimum 3 years left in them and Nsiala, Hammar & Dier (?) all promising...

It's an extra 500k I'd rather throw into Drenthe's wages/signing fee.

Hi. I'm an AEK fan that happens to support Everton in the UK.
Kostas Manolas is the nephew of one of the most important AEK players and possibly the greatest Greek defender Stelios Manolas.
However Kostas is not that good. He is talented but I do not consider him the best next thing or anything like that.

His pros: very fast, relatively good tackler, better technique than most DCs, can score goals (especially from set pieces)
His cons: lacks discipline in his game that contributes to bad positioning (loses his player), he is not very strong (especially for a league like PL).

I don't believe he can make an impact right now and judging from Moyes' ways I don't believe he will use him.
I wouldn't like to lose him as currently there are not many DCs in our squad, but if things were otherwise I wouldn't mind selling him.
Greek media are saying that AEK has agreed with Everton, however Manolas has not agreed yet. Everton have given him until 14.00 (greek time, which is 12.00 UK) to decide.

This move appears to be off, AEK's president: Manolas is staying. We had told the player that if he & Everton agreed terms we wouldn't stand between them. It didn't happen.
