A new broom sweeps clean and I don't think it is a major surprise. We all wanted new owners and they will want their own people in place.

I think he has done ok generally , some good and some bad. This is the dawn of a new era and TFG have decided this is the right thing to do and just because he was alright on a budget doesn't mean he is the right guy to spend the big money we are all hoping will be spent in the summer.

Bet Thewell has no shortage of suitors when he’s available.

Saying that, the assumption is we’re electing not to renew, it might be Thewell himself has a better offer and doesn’t want to renew.
Interesting point.

Beyond a consideration of the players that he's signed it's hard for us to give an opinion on how successful he has been as a DoF because so much is unknown / not measurable.

I think he's done a very decent job in very difficult circumstances but did leave the squad slightly unbalanced and it's striking that he never signed a good full back or right midfield.

I think you are right though, it will be interesting to see where he end up and perhaps that will tell us a lot about how well he is regarded in footballing terms.

Personally I'd be surprised if a top half premier League team took him on.

I guess we're all presuming it was TFG who pulled the plug on him.

Maybe he decided to walk or had a different opportunity.

….i very much doubt that but i suspect he’s known for a while he was being shown the door. Be interesting where he goes next, our previous DOF is now President of a Champions League Club.

Doesn't worry me in the slightest.

Moyes is great at spotting potential in a player.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Moyes actually becomes DoF at some point in the future, quite possibly within the term of his present contract

I agree with this I can remember in his first spell here he scouted the like of Petr Cech and Didier Drogba (before they became stars at Chelsea) to name a couple but alas we didn't have the money to buy potential at the time maybe this time we do

It’s not even necessarily that I want Thelwell long term, it’s just a critical time for us. So many contracts running down, paper thin squad…Thelwell had done enough for me to at least stick it out with Moyes. And when they’d laid some better foundations, a more ‘ambitious’ regime could come in and have a real crack at it.
It could be that the decision was Thelwell’s.

Good luck to him I think he was willing guy but not the right fit. I was going to say he was an honest guy but he didn't half talk some 💩 especially with Dyche and how well we were doing with Dyche. I think Thelwell is just another reminder of a very poor era in which the club was very poorly run and is a casualty of it.

Perhaps!

The one good thing about this, no matter what people think of Thelwell, is that there SHOULD be someone lined up as soon as the season is over. What we really needed to avoid was uncertainty going into the window, and that looks to be unlikely if they’ve made their decision now.

I wouldn't be wary at all...Doherty would be a brilliant appointment.

Atalanta seems to be doing ok with the players they've brought in.

Just because they've been at us previously doesn't mean they wouldn't be a good appointment.

Moyes has proved going back isn't always the wrong decision ha.
Mick Doherty has been Atalanta's UK Scout since November 2023

Players Atalanta have signed from the UK since November 2023:
  • Ben Godfrey
Yep, he's been doing a tremendous job

“Utterly mediocre bordering on rubbish.

Yet some fans here worried about losing the man who has asset stripped the squad to death and filled it with the likes of Ashley Young?”

The squad is better now than when he started

Not remotely surprising. If the Friedkins do indeed have big plans for the club, they will want the best man they can get in world football for the role. If this job was advertised tomorrow, would Thelwell really be the best man in world football for it? I can't imagine he'd get an interview.

I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the manager goes too, in the summer.

I don't believe these fellas took over to be happy with "staying up" or even a slow build to the top. They want pizzazz and drama. They're of the entertainment industry. They like to make a splash. Moyes is merely Everton's Ranieri. Who our Mourinho and Dybala prove to be will be instructive.
