Kevin Pietersen has been dropped by England for the third Test after he was unable to prove he did not send derogatory text messages about fellow team-mates to the South Africa team.

The England and Wales Cricket Board delayed announcing the squad by six hours to hold talks with Pietersen.

But ECB director Hugh Morris said a resolution could not be secured.

"We have made every attempt to find a solution to enable him to be selected," he said.

"We have concluded that, in the team's best interest, he will miss the Test."

Pietersen, 32, hinted after the second Test against South Africa that he was contemplating retirement from the five-day game, and suggested the Lord's Test next week may be his last for England.

But he will not play in that game after failing to disprove allegations that he has criticised coach Andy Flower and captain Andrew Strauss in a series of messages to members of the South African squad.

Yorkshire batsman Jonny Bairstow - who made his Test debut in May - has been recalled to the squad, with James Taylor keeping his place.

Pietersen has been at odds with the ECB since he quit limited-overs internationals in May, telling BBC's Test Match Special at the time: "I can't give any assurances [that the next Test will not be my last].

"I love playing Test cricket, but there are obstacles and I'll decide what happens at the end of the next Test."

However, he then went on to post a video on YouTube in which he made himself available to England for all forms of cricket.

Pietersen scored 149 not out in the drawn second Test and afterwards said: "I've never batted better in my life."

It was a dramatic return to form for a player who averaged just 11.16 in the Test series defeat by Pakistan earlier in the season.

ha, a day after he said he came out of retirement for all forms

Great player, massive ego. Personally I would have let him play 20/20. Players liek him are the reason it's worth watching.

ECB utterly correct he left them nowhere to go he's been given far too much leeway in years past and clearly thinks he IS the England team and no else is needed well maybe this will make him think otherwise, that video was utterly laughable, please its been so hard being me,its time he grew up and stop acting like a little girl with a skimmed knee,he brought this on himself, noone else.

I've said elsewhere in threads i dont think he'll be around after the next ashes series frankly and its got to the point where good riddance, great player as he is but enough is enough.

He is Englands best player, mainly because he has some mental strength about him. The other's don't have any winning mentality if things aren't going their way.

Refuses to apologise for tweets
Releases the video despite being told not to

What a mess. You're right, it may be time for him to go altogether.

Totally agree with you here mate. Obviously I rate KP really, really highly, for me he will be remembered on the field as a great with some of the innings he has played, but off the field he really does some bellish stuff doesn't he?

From playing cricket at a decent level over here, I understand that there are always a lot of egos in the changing rooms and it can be an individual sport, but those personalities need to come together to form a strong core in the team. His is obviously not helping.

To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if one of the players is behind the fake twitter account, and they are defo laughing at him behind his back, but he's deserving it. Needs to be mentally stronger.
