He was still playing a fair amount of games last season.

Getting him sign a new deal means we would not lose him on a free this summer (his last contract was due to expire in June 2018). We still get a fair fee (kind of) now.

Unlike a certain blue who had chosen to screw the club by running down his contract till the last 6 months.

Totally agree with this, wouldn't be surprised to see an upturn in form getting some of these rats and sh1t-stirring players out of the dressing room and club. 2 down another 1 or 2 to cull I'd say.
