At this time every season, we are linked with every Thom, Dirk and Harri from all over mainland Europe. The media know we are short of credible back-up in key positions, so naturally, lazy journalism kicks in and the legions of red-top and equally ill informed national sports radio hosts throw our name into a cocked hat alongside the likes of Villa, Newcastle and occasionally one of the 'Sky Four'. This time, even our glorious leader is getting the treatment from them.

Last season the news of Gueye, Vellios and of a Portuguese wonderkid named Silva, came filtering through. We saw Gueye in pre-season and we all took a sharp in take of breath - this lad was the new Landon Donovan ( but in a Saha's old clothes and haircut) ! Gueye made the bench, but not enough appearances, Vellios made a even less cameo appearances and even more sadly, the Portuguese lad didn't even cross the white line onto the Hallowed turf .

If we do sign anyone, I always fear that are hopes will be built up and our frustrations met when we are all baying for Moyes to " Give that young foreign kid a chance, Moysie lad " when a change on the pitch is most needed and our more seasoned players are wilting in front of our eyes ( I'm looking at you Billy ! ):unsure:

to be fair Vellios signed in Janaury and made three appearances. I think all this youth buying will pay off, and it will only take 1 gem for it all to be worth it. Vellios and gueye both look to have something about them, Gueye can put a hell of a cross in and has a bit of pace and a brain about him. Vellios looekd good in his Villa cameo, having a header almost go in if it wasn't for a fantastic save.

I think we will see both in some capacity next season.

I ahvent seen anyone go 'Gueye/Vellios will be the next Kanchelskis or ferguson etc'. Nothing wrong with what we are doing and building up some hope for youth system, however it does appear that it's our main focus sometimes. I think it's great that some fans are saying give them a chance, and i agree, i would have love to seen Gueye alot more last season. However the problem is that we aren't saying give him a chance becuase we are clear ahead and the games won, it's because our current first eleven is a bit lacklusture in certain areas.. (Attack, 1 upfront... youngsters wont get a chance unless major injuries).

Just to add aswell, i'd love it i they brought a u21 rule in or something, with 2 players from everyteam having to be u21', would help not only the league become mroe open for younger players, but would heklp the national team aswell.

It seems the case, but our current lack of activity even in the 'free' market does seems to be ongoing concern in many a fan's mind, and soon they'll scream at the boards lack of ambition for not giving them something to coo over, when the harsh reality is their not the ones saddled with the monetary side of it.
Besides this I think the days of marque signings, mega clubs excluded, are coming to an end, so we the fans better get used to it.
There is less risk getting loads of kids through the club's academy and having far reaching scouting network than keep hedging multi million quid bets on the transfer market.

Is keeping our powder dry another way of saying we are skint? Thats the reality. If we had money available them Moyes would have signed N'Zogbia by now.

To me its looks like we have to sell before we buy. Read somewhere that wigan handed Nzogbia on a plate to us (4.5 up front + another 5 to be paid over 3 years) cause they did'nt want him going to newcastle. It is very dishearting every tranfer window, same old ding dong no money crap we ave to listen too.
Even the promoted teams will outspend again. Would love to know what was said in the meeting between moyes and bill about funds for this window.

You need to get yourself some of this stuff. Nothing worse than your Aunt Nora getting soggy...
