Keeper conundrum

I don't know if Ijjy is a keeper Zatmeister. No point worrying about it really, can't see money being an issue tbh, so it's down to the manager to bring the right man in.

He'll pop up later i guess, seem to remember him saying he was a keeper or used to be a keeper. In any case interesting he rated Schmeichel so highly and now Burridge backed him up on it...doesnt seem to be as good as de gea etc but could very well be underrated.

As for money, if it was me id spend as much as possible on getting the very best who would come. Butland could be stuck at Stoke so then (as above) i think we go for Rico (22) or Leno (23) but an interesting one is Ter Stegen (23) who has been in Barca of course but only plays champions league. Think also him and Rico being in Spain "may" adapt better than a keeper whose never lived or played overseas.

Even if Robles continues to do well i think we should go for one of these types as the position is crucial.

I just hope the ospina marshall mandanda links are nonsense.

Just to follow on from my previous post, i wonder if its a stretch to think that we would look at the number of points that a keeper makes a difference to over a season and the prize money difference per placing...

Its just a barometer but people say its generally 10pts difference i think. So, going for a keeper of 22 or 23 years of age is a wise "investment" even for a large transfer fee if it does make a difference of course.

When italian football with james richardson was on channel four on sundays there were a few very good keepers in that league and also around Europe but now perhaps its just me but they dont seem to have the same high profile or perhaps there just arent many out there....

It seems like we have Buffon, Casillas, handanovic,Cech then Hart and handanovic for example then the rest are all 23 and younger.

That Donnarumma who made his debut for Milan at 16 and is now 17 has been phenomenal and a bit of a freak. Im not saying we should sign him or even think of signing him as a first choice keeper and he is Milans "jewel" in the crown and they bought Romagnoli (young italian centre back) for €25mil in the summer so they wouldnt sell him unless a ridiculous offer was made....

However if Man City or PSG came in with a silly offer for him now on a very long contract but left him at milan on loan for a few seasons they would potentially have a future keeper sewn up after Hart...

We should look to not only sign a first choice but also another one to loan out and develop. We would then have Robles + another and then one on loan...

my brain is starting to ache!!!

As @MoutsGoat
said, it looks like 9 keepers rather than 10 but that seems obscene to me. How can they all receive specialist coaching and game time? Looks very scattergun to me...

As a young keeper though at say 17 or 18 years of age why join everton from your club when we have 9 others on the books at u18 and u21 level?? Even as a standout keeper i would imagine they would have less 1-1 coaching....

No it's 10 GKs from 20 -16, you've both missed out Joe Hilton , 16 year old we got from Man City earlier this month, which is what re-ignited the whole "Why have we got so many young GKs ?" debate.

Dunno what the answer is as to why join us , particularly Hilton or equally what we see in him that's different , maybe fact he's 6 foot 5 apparently.

It's funny because after mocking the idea all January, we could now probably legitimately get Butland in the summer if we wanted to. Oh football

I think we still might be underestimating Robles. And I think maybe Roberto rates him more highly than keeping him on the bench for so long suggests.
So if he's in that spot for another 8 to 10 years bringing through young keepers who can step in three or four years down the line is the way to go.
As a leftfield solution for our current squad why not bring in a decent keeper who can still hold down a first team place if needed but can also work with Robles on a coaching level leaving the other guy free to work at youth level.

There was a time in the Spanish youth team setup where Robles was rated more than De Gea. I'm still not totally convinced but he seems to have made significant performance improvements during the last 2 seasons.

Its time to go German, best production line for keepers and in general they are relatively affordable most the time.

For me it would have to be someone early 20's, if we went experienced we would need a high profile name as there isn't a massive amount of options in experienced GKs who could be signed (who are at the level we are aiming to reach) so i don't see that being a realistic option to us.

Ter Stegen will be out of our reach, my german team is Gladbach and at the moment this guy is a level up from us, if he did leave Barcelona which i just don't see happening as they see him as the long term GK then he would 100% join a champions league team. Leno is also far too unrealistic that he would drop from a champions league side to join a currently mid table pushing for europe team.

For me it would have to be Loris Karius or Timo Horn, preferably Karius but both are very good young talents, both only 22 and had over a seasons experience in the bundesliga. German keepers in general are just a different level, neuer, ter stegen, leno, trapp, karius, horn, fahrmann.

Other than them the only GK i could sort of see happening atm is Begovic, should be a #1 too good to be playing back up.

Robles is our best option at the moment, however we need to replace with a top class goalkeeper and if there is any shred of truth in what is being banded about for money for the summer it should open more doors then before in who we look at.

I agree its time to go german for keepers - they are producing some great talent in that position.

I agree about the German keeper, because unless he becomes world class he's not getting anywhere near their national team with Ter Stegen and Neuer to compete with. This means a lower price despite the amount of good quality keepers they produce.

I've seen this said a lot, but five total appearances across four different age groups for Spain's youth squads implies differently. De Gea's made 75 appearances for Spain's different youth squads. Exactly when was Robles favored over de Gea?

I agree with you i think alot of it was just myth but there might have been a youth level in Atleti were the coach favoured Joel at the same age. History backs it up though that De Gea was ahead of Joel at Atleti, Joel's debut was during a time when De Gea was injured.

As a side note to what i wrote earlier having considered certain other GKs 1 i would take although he seems to have disappeared due to a falling out with the manager is Sirigu at PSG.

Good age for a GK, clearly has a lot of talent but seems to have lost his way at PSG after the falling out and if he became available would certainly be an option to consider given that only a couple of seasons ago people viewed him as a possible Buffon replacement for Italy.
