Keeper conundrum

I agree with you i think alot of it was just myth but there might have been a youth level in Atleti were the coach favoured Joel at the same age. History backs it up though that De Gea was ahead of Joel at Atleti, Joel's debut was during a time when De Gea was injured.

As a side note to what i wrote earlier having considered certain other GKs 1 i would take although he seems to have disappeared due to a falling out with the manager is Sirigu at PSG.

Good age for a GK, clearly has a lot of talent but seems to have lost his way at PSG after the falling out and if he became available would certainly be an option to consider given that only a couple of seasons ago people viewed him as a possible Buffon replacement for Italy.

Yeah i don't know whats happened to Sirigu, heard everything form a fallout with blanc to he is massively on the decline already.

My preferred keeper would be Leno - I have absolutely no idea if it would be possible, how much he would cost or if he would be willing to join - but he is top class and very unfortunate that Germany have so many talent keepers at the moment.

@mikeh72

I think the investment wouldnt change anything as Stoke are owned by Coates so cash isnt an issue for them. Totally loaded.

The way to sway the signing is to leverage our England players. Then hope he puts in a transfer request...

McColl, your post above on Karius and Horn makes sense and both 'should be' obtainable. Why discount Leno though -- he'd make more money and may fancy playing in the prem, more of a likely deal than when van der sar joined fulham :) For me he and Sergio Rico should be the initial first choice keepers + im not so sure Ter Stegen is lined up to be first choice at Barca its all a bit weird there just giving him champs league games...

He won't be arsed about our England players though will he, I was more touching on the fact we can now probably blow teams like Stoke out the water on wages. Anyway it was a bit tongue-in-cheek, I still don't think he's worth what they'd want for him in terms of transfer fee

This will be a big question. A lot will depend on Robles form between now and the end of the season. If he can keep performing as he is and perhaps get better I can't see us attracting a better goalkeeper than him (proven) and we will probably look for an experienced backup.
Butland has had a fantastic season, but if Robles continues his improvement we could be mentioning him in the same sentence come May.

If Robles dips off a bit, I expect this will be an obvious position to fill.

I think the coates family are worth billions arent they?

As for "not being arsed about our England players", imagine your Hodgson and go off to watch the English players each week to monitor their form. When he goes to Spurs he can see Dier,Kane, Alli and whoever else....comes to Everton to see Baines, Jagielka, Stones and Barkley...or goes to Stoke to watch....Butland.

If Butland was at our club i'd guess he would have more time in front of Hodgson (and next England managers) and it cant hurt to see how he does behind Jags,Baines and Stones.....also if he played well behind them he may feel that he would be more likely to be the Number 1 for the England team as he would be playing with 3 of the squads defenders.

Surely in his mind at least more chance compared to being the only player at stoke to watch?

On Leno, there is no doubt he is a very good GK and its because of that, that i think it would be difficult to get him to come here regardless of us getting european football this summer. Say he decided to leave Leverkusen for failing to get in to europe this season (which there is a chance they might on current form) and he decides its time to move on this summer. A fair few high profile teams are going to be needing to look into new GKs over the next couple of windows, i can see Utd losing De Gea and Leno would be the perfect replacement, we all know Utd aint what they were but that tradition and history still carries in europe so the lure of them would far eclipse us unless he bought into the youthful approach we have. Around europe teams like Juventus were Buffon can't have many seasons left and Roma who need to identify a #1 if they don't approach Szczesny would also be massive pulls compared to us.

On Ter Stegen, i would honestly love him here, i've followed his career since he was at youth level before being called up to save Gladbach after Logan Bailly was on cruise course to relegate them. The problem Ter Stegen currently has is he is seen as far too inconsistent, the issue with this is hes only played in the champions league so its difficult to improve consistency when your not playing consistent games :D Many in spain will agree that he makes saves that Bravo wouldn't and hes arguably the best ball playing GK in world football (messi himself has joked that in training he has better ball control than him) The only reason he won't succeed at Barca is if he doesn't find a way of becoming more consistent and in fairness it affected him at times for Gladbach to and has crucified him at the international level. Whether or not he would ask for a move im not quite sure, hes a very loyal player (if you've never seen him leaving Gladbach it was an emotional moment) and when your winning the champions league keeping clean sheets against the best sides its only a matter of time until he gets a chance in the league and goes on a proper run of form.

The flaw in that thinking is that when he watches Stoke he's not limited to watching Stoke players as two teams are needed for a game of football. Add in the fact he's a regular squad member already on Hodgson's radar then club form becomes less important.

Any move that Butland makes is going to be motivated by club circumstances, not international. If you're an English keeper playing regular top flight football then the England manager is well aware of you - Butland's biggest chance of being No1 is Joe Hart letting the international side down which is unlikely as he's very consistent and has the right mentality to cope with pressure.

Whether or not Butland plays behind 3 defenders who aren't actually automatic choices for England's starting XI isn't going to influence Hodgson either.

The best chance of getting a "Butland" is to start giving our young goalkeepers 1st team football. Either for us or getting them out on loan - there's an element of risk but then it's the same with spending millions on any goalkeeper. There's no guarantees.
