I was the same desk,I carried a tennis ball, then a golf ball running to school with me as well working on the premise that if I could control/master them,a footy would be easymeat, didn't do me much good though,I never made the first team for the Toffs(n);)lol

Haha yep I wasn't that great in my early teens, got better later.

I remember going for a trial and it was obvious I wasn't going to be picked. At the end the coach pulled everyone together and told those not progressing (me included) that we were not good enough.

Anyway I put my hand up and said he was wrong. "Wrong" he said "why am I wrong, we watched you play and you're not good enough"

Excuse me sir, I said, you need someone with a footballing brain and I have a good footballing brain.

It got me another chance but I wasn't good enough and I knew it. Great fun trying though and still love playing to this day.

Age 11 is too young to know that you will be never ever be good enough to be a professional football player.

Despite endless hours belting a ball against a wall.

I know mate, can't beat it,I packed in a couple of years ago, basically I think I was going to kark it if I carried onlol,I was great for the first five minutes then I'd be breathing through my backside, and this was five a side I'd regressed to at this pointlol, never thought when I was a youngster i'd say this but i've seen this "walking football"advertised, and I'm interestedlollol

When the time comes I will move onto walking football.

I play for a mixed age team, couple of us over 50, a few in the 40's and the majority in late 30's. The key is not to compete with the younger ones for pace as they kill you. We still play on a full sized pitch. Couple of the guys played professionally in Italy and have amazing technical skill.

Enjoy it more now than I did 20 years ago. Played this morning, scoring 2 even though we lost 5-2.

The 'highlight' of my footballing time at school was being named as substitute for a game. I ran excitedly onto the pitch only for the ref to blow for full time. From then on it was downhill all the way, leading to extensive counselling for deep seated psychological trauma.
He recommended getting a season ticket at Everton, and from then on, I've been as happy as a snowman with a new carrot for his nose

Mid 50s. Still play 5 a side whenever I can. Never saying the words I have packed in. Full size pitch would be a struggle though until I got used to it again.
