Like the way we dug in and put a great team effort in on Monday, the whole team pretty much played their part in that hammering v Newcastle.I thought Jordan Pickford showed poor communication and a lack of authority this evening, and pretty much unsettled our defence. Not blaming him for the defeat, though.
He's been excellent against them the last two seasons. Big drop from those standards today. He shouldn’t play against the barcodes, he always lets the occasion get the better of him imo.
Had a mare, but he wasn’t the only one by any stretch.
Yes. Easily his worst. But they are few and far between. On him today. Might be his worst ever performance for us
Yep.Pickford is a legend. Just a poor game today. Doesn’t deserve the booing.
Happens too often regardless, occasion gets to him. He's been excellent against them the last two seasons. Big drop from those standards today.
My lad who never seen Big Nev ( who I rate as the best ) asked me....
If Pickford was our keeper in the 80's instead of Big Nev would we still have been so successful ?
After a few moments thoughts ....
I have to say most definately Yes
Would he have saved Whitesides curler in 85 ?...got me thinking tbh.
Incredible.
He'd be similar to our lovable neighbours madman Bruce Grobbelaar, suspect aerially but the best shop stopper in the businessI'm not going after Pickford as anyone can have a bad game, but tonight is just the latest in a long line of examples that kind of prove Jordan would have struggled massively in the 80's. Every set piece he would have been bullied and roughed up by the grocks of the day, in this era with all the protection he struggles to come through a crowd and claim the ball, be it catch or a punch clear.
If your keeper doesn't, the play stays alive and increases the chance someone might stick the ball in the net. That's where comparisons of him v Nev are night and day.
It's up to Moyes and the defenders to fully understand this and come up with a plan to help Jordan in these moments, just as Pickford helps the team by his usual brilliant shotstopping when the defenders haven't covered themselves in glory during open play.
