His politics stank, but in the right film, a decent presence.

'The Searchers' is rightly seen as one of the greatest westerns of all time.

Montgomery Clift acted him off the screen in 'Red River'.
 

While not in any way suggesting what he said is correct as it's not, however for me it's nothing more than a another instance of a man of his time being critiqued.

Yet, these critiques are using the wonder of hindsight whereby applying current morals and view to a situation where they aren't truly applicable.

There's countless current issues that people could be rightfully bringing to the fore, rather than lambasting a man who is dead and can't defend himself.
