I've seen Pique do exactly the same thing in World Cups and Champions League games.

So...why can't Stones IF hes capable of doing it?

...but it's time and place mate. After a month of Keystone Cops defending you have to get a bit of basics into your defending.

I want football from the back, of course. But arseing around like that deep in your own box in this climate is not part of that deal.

Its not like he made one decision to just fanny about and have a laugh in the box. In that small passage of play he made three or four judgements that instead of getting rid, he could turn his man and get some space so he can pick his pass and give us the chance of attacking for the 3 points.

He was right each time it turned out. It was a drag back and foul that stopped him striding out.

Yes he will. It's one reason though that if I was manager of a club going for the lot I'd buy Stones and put him in the first team very sparingly for the first season.

He can be a liability position-wise and he'd be right under the microscope.

He should thank his lucky stars he was forced to stay last summer. Despite all his tears it's saved him from a public mauling.

Still can't quite believe his "fackyou" moment, clearly mouthing it after his prolonged twists and turns in his own box.

As I have said before, he knows what the commonsense option is but is purposely choosing to ignore it (clearly with Roberto's blessing). His reaction to the crowd spoke volumes, this is how I play, take it or leave it.

if you are talking about just after the incident when he is already on his way up the pitch....he said ME...not YOU. Which is still a peed off reaction, but not exactly the same.

Pique (cant stand him, tbh, but...) was VERY risk averse when he broke through. Read the game much better than Stones does.

Not a great comparison, tbh...or a flattering one to be precise.

There's a big difference between not encouraging him and booing him, though. I can't think of any other park in the league where players get booed for hypothetical mistakes that haven't actually happened.

Booing him? I don't remember that. Fans were panicking and shouting to clear it, stonsey just sorted it an told everyone to calm down.

Exactly. It's just common sense: dial it down a bit...especially against a pressing team like Spurs. It was absolutely daft and he rightly got stick for it.

Well I am sorry if I like that a young player at Everton has the confidence to know he can go inside in the box and then get away from his man or if not can turn the hapless bugger again and go the other way.

As you also go on about. Its a long term thing here. Give them the confidence to show their talent and we reap the benefits. Punting at times is fine, of course, but I don't think we should whinge and moan at a great young player because he tried something risky just because another player in another game got caught out. Thats Moyes thinking that...

I love watching Stones, and his progression has been unbelievable.
When he was linked with Chelsea I always thought it was the wrong move for him, as for me JM would of just made him a defender, for me he has more to his game than simply defending.
He will make mistakes and he will learn from these mistakes, but sometimes there are times in a game were you have to defend and if that means a row Z ball so be it.
A great talent who will hopefully learn from today's criticism

Not a great comparison, tbh...or a flattering one to be precise.

At United where he wasn't fitting in or near the level of Ferdinand, where making a mistake or being too risky led to him not getting a game.

Goes to Barca, opens up more and has more faith in his ability, especially with Puyol next to him for cover.

But the point being is that, the type of player Pique is fits a top top side where the pressure is bigger. But it still doesn't change the player.

...and he could have seen his pursuer snake a leg out and the ball fall lose in our area with TH to beat...not odds I'd take, tbh.

And there are times when you let the player trust his own talent and confidence and try make the more positive attacking move.

Stones gets rid plenty of times. So basically he does both.
