John Stones

...I really like this fella but it opens the debate about the wisdom of keeping players who truly want to be elsewhere, particularly when the issue is played out in the full glare of publicity. He's more than good enough to turn his form around but in hindsight the decision to block a move might not have been in the best interest of the club (although I appreciate nobody met our valuation).

Thinking the same thing myself, Eggs.

It is an old football adage.....don't hang on to players who want away.

And to be honest, I think they did meet what the club would gave valued him at, which was ridiculous money for a player with such limited experience.

I think the problem was more we had no other centre back besides Jags.

If Jose had made that bid at the start of June, giving us time to shop around for replacements, he would gave got his man IMO.

would boo-ing a bit louder help?

maybe we could make some boo signs?

this is a good point - we could make a decent case for him to stay along the lines of "you clearly still need more polish, and extra year of first team football in a supportive environment surrounded by young talent would be best in the long run."

but if he's going to face temper-tantrums from supporters every time he misplaces a pass or doesn't hoof it (which we moaned about just as intensely under Moyes) then he might as well do it on three times the wages in the champions league for el spanish kopites

Thats not even debatable imo. As it stood we barely got Mori to sign in time before the window shut, and he was supposed to be a 3rd choice CB. Having Stones leave at the end, not a chance. But even in early-mid July? Think theres almost no chance he would be here anymore.

I think you are more or less agreeing with me.

An early bid, giving us time to pursue other options Funes Mori among them, as I am sure the club did not just become aware of him at the end of August, would in all probability have secured Stones for Chelsea.

In short, it was the timing of Jose's bid which failed.....not the amount. IMO.

For Christ's sake, leave the lad alone! He's 21 yrs old and the amount of pressure and scrutiny he his being put through by the media (London based) and our fans who buy that drivel is ridiculous. This new round of 'now lets slaughter the lad' is all designed to get him out of our club and I cannot believe the fans are falling for it. Last night for example we have the TalkShite croonies saying Stones was 'unceremoniously hauled off' No he wasn't, he was substituted! I would like to see some of those throwing the 'stones' deal with a tenth of the pressure this lad is put under (and don't give me the earnings crap). Sometimes the atmosphere at Goodison sickens me and I'm 50 years fabric this year! Get behind the lad, put a big Goodison arm around him, he's been totally professional in how he's dealt with all this crap, some of you have very short memories!!!

And by the way, up until that second non-goal last night, we'd defended alright hadn't we? Rode our luck a bit, but you expect that at City, most teams do to get a result there. Let's hope the final gets decided by an equally ridiculous decision and then we can listen to one of the media's darling teams bleat!

He needs a reality check, as is the case with a lot of players that are hyped up from a young age.

The problem is that this absolute fart of a manager isn't willing to step in, and so it's falling to the fans to go about it in their own hamfisted way.

Saying that, he did get ragged off last night, so maybe Martinez is going to act for once.

I very much agree with you about the pressure the lad is under , but we all knew this was going to happen at some stage.

However, the player could make life easier for himself . Last Sunday he got caught out against Swansea, he overplayed the ball and then gave a hospital pass to his keeper. A week or two before that he totally overplayed the ball in the the square and when the supporters behind him got upset he dismissed them with some hand gestures.
That episode told me that it was more the player than the coaching staff that insists on always playing the ball out of defence.

I could live with that.....just so long as the ridiculous decision goes against the RS.
It won't,they'll nobble danger men Aguero, Silva and De Bruyne in the first 15 minutes, obviously Lucas will not get carded for this, they'll hang on for extra time,Mignolet (who they despise)will have an absolute stormer of a game,it will go to pens and................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz,you know the rest

+1

I don't think a dip in form effects a price tag.

David Luiz was either not playing or being terrible in games, and still went for £50mill.
Nonsense. Luiz was our best player in the 2nd half of his last season here. 2 years ago and we still haven't replaced him. He's more appreciated in France where playing out the back is encouraged.

Luiz was unfairly criticized because of his eccentric style. The better you are technically as a defender the worse defender you're perceived. I feel for Stones, he probably needs a move to La Liga where insanely jealous, marginal players like Carragher aren't slandering his name or fans aren't getting on his back because he refuses to hoof and concede possession.
