Solid this man

This is defo his best position...I was a bit suspect of him at right back when I saw him play Wolves and in centre mid

Hietinga and Jag's is pretty damn exciting

Again, maybe this is why we saw a better Distin last night too (y)

Just before the last transfer window I thought I'd do a bit of research to come up with a new defender for us...I've already said in another post that I've got too much time on my hands! lol I looked at the squads of all the national teams above England in the FIFA rankings. Of the players that were of the right age, I ruled out the ones who were playing regularly for the bigger European sides. I actually did this the day before news broke of him joining us, and he stood out by a mile. So you can imagine how excited I was when it became a reality.

He was a huge talent at Ajax and moved to Athletico Madrid for £8.8m. I was expecting him to cost too much. That we managed to get him for less than Athletico paid for him, just £6.2m is fantastic business by the club.

One aspect of his game that we haven't seen yet is his goalscoring. For Ajax he had a 1 in 7 strike rate. Even though he didn't complete a season in Spain it was 1 in 9. Even at international level it's 1 in 8. To compare, Fellaini is about 1 in 9 this season.

Then there's his versatility. Just like Jags, he's found his preferred position at centre back. Given that we've got such a small squad, it's great that he cal play at full back or midfield too, if required.

His distribution has looked more composed than Jagielka's too. He seems comfortable playing the simple ball into Fellaini and building from the back. When he has gone long, they've most been purposeful lofted balls rather than desperate hoofs upfield. Hopefully some of that will rub off on Jags.

That pass to Pienaar in the first half was excellent, It's great to have a defender with that in his locker, it always means he can make the step up into midfield without any problems.

He proves that defender don't need to fly around tackling like there's no tommorrow. The key to good defending is having a good footballing brain to read the game well. I've never see opposing striker dominate him. Not Drogba, not Torres not anyone.

What position did he play at Athletico?

I heard be was their player of the year last season...and a Dutch Colleague of mine says he usually plays right back for Holland

Centre back as definitely suited him, he looks like he could properly go mental at someone if he needed to also (y)

He was playing there mostly as centre back and Atletico's defense was terrible as usual, so there's no way he was player of the season there. Occasionally he was playing as RB.
I think Premierleague suits him much more than LaLiga, I can't see him doing well as right back for us (lacks pace), but he's doing better than expected as no-nonsense CB with very good passing ability, he was also good playing as DM/CM (as some Dutch friends predicted when we were signing him, despite him almost never playing in midfield before).
For Holland NT I think he was 50-50 between playing as right back and playing as centre back, although these days he is more of a centre back there too.
