Joel Robles article

He's improved massively this season but his No 1 problem is his decision making. 3 recent examples of this are the 3rd RS derby goal, the Albrighton free kick for Leicester, and last Saturdays foul on Vokes.

If he can improve on this he could establish himself as our No 1 keeper for next season, but I'm not sure he will.

Thing is I think they already have helped Robles.

He did well last year in a struggling side bar the calamity vs Sunderland.

However, he has built on that this year and has made some really important saves.

But, the fact of the matter is he's still making those same blunders and I don't think common sense is something that can be coached into anybody.

I don't want Joel to go. I want us to keep him.

But he's a number two.

A number two you could have confidence in coming in if needed, but a number two none the less.

He is not a number two at all though. Mainly because he seems to take a couple of games to get into the swing of things. Dropping him into the side randomly due to injury or rotation etc would be a disaster.

Then he'll be sold, because Koeman won't put up with the blunders he's been making in the past few games.

And I personally thought he did well as soon as he came into the side this year.

His first full game was Leicester (A) and he did fine.

But he just makes the same mistakes he has been for two years.

Precisely.

Mr. Preece neglects to list the games where Joel's alertness after long spells of inactivity won us points at Palace and kept our lead intact when Bournemouth had got back in the game at Goodison.

Or how he was brilliant at Old Trafford.

It seems to me many people round these parts can't wait to pick holes in Joel's game....when the truth is we would struggle to sign a better keeper from the EPL right now.

Of the six teams above us, I don't think many would rather have the custodians at City, Arsenal or the RS.

Lloris had a nightmare of spectacular proportions at City and De Gea had a bust up with Jose after the fiasco that was the Jags goal at OT.

There ain't no such thing as a perfect, fault free goalkeeper.

They all have their mad moments and off days.

Joel is doing well for us and I fully expect him to keep improving and will be our undisputed número uno goalkeeper come August
Thing is mate, whilst Joel has improved immensely over the last 2 years, I think the last few weeks has shown that he is still not the finished article. But he is only 26, still quite young for a keeper, and there is no reason why he can't develop further.

I've been one of his biggest supporters this year and have defended him against many on here that seem to blame him for almost every goal we concede. But there have been a number of goals conceded where I was unsure about his positioning, as he very often finds himself about 10-15 yards off his line. He's a big lad so can be a bit slow getting down to low shots at the best of times. But this problem is exacerbated when he's so far off his line that the ball is past him so quickly before he gets a chance to react.

I don't profess to know much about keeping techniques so am not aware whether this positioning was something that they are told to do or not. But according to this article, it's a bad trait that Joel seems to either always had or recently acquired. Hopefully it's something that can be easily coached out of him.

I think the article is actually quite a good one, the criticism being more constructive than dismissive. We should welcome pieces like this as if it help us improve Joel and make him into a better keeper, then it could save us a lot of money in the transfer market.;)

Former keeper David Preece being a bit harsh on Robles here I reckon

Hi mate, I notice this is your only post since joining today.

In future when posting links, please include at least some of the text, like so;

How Joel Robles can improve to become Everton’s long-term goalkeeper “When we see a more relaxed Joel Robles holding better positions, we will then see a keeper looking like the long-term answer to Everton, post-Tim Howard” (Photo: Getty) David Preece 1 hourWednesday April 19th 2017 Three losses in 16 games does not indicate Ronald Koeman’s Everton are suffering from a defensive crisis. Far from it. The fact that two of those losses came from local rivals Liverpool probably smarts a bit, but other than that, it isn’t a bad record. In that same period, they have managed to keep eight clean sheets. More than any other side, with Burnley behind them in second place with six. So where’s the problem then? Well, since Maarten Stekelenburg relinquished his starting place due to injury in the Merseyside derby in December, Joel Robles has been their number one, taking over in that game and subsequently holding down his spot on the Dutchman’s return to fitness. On the surface, deservedly so, it would seem.

But the first game in he made the "mistake" in the derby.

I think a lot depends on if you class the goals he lets in as mistakes, as it seems that pretty much every goal conceded is a mistake....

I think he could probably have done better for the Mane goal in the home derby in that he was a bit quick to come off his line, but Sturridge's shot was dragged, deflected and rebounded off the post. The defence were slow to react. Other than that he'd made two good saves IIRC.

But lately (since Spurs away) I think he's been poor. And proved he isn't the long-term solution.

This is not harsh
Carragher's remarks were harsh (and probably the safer way to go about having a goalie). This is optimistic.

Maybe he is just having a rough patch? It happens.

I'm not even defending him really, I think he is alright, I am just not seeing many improvements on the keepers mentioned to replace him. Realistically I think we need a bit of an inspired signing that is a bit out of left field rather than the similar standard ones that keep being brought up otherwise we are just going to end up with 3 fairly decent keepers none of which are exceptional.

Who is "former keeper David Preece" and why is so much weight being given to his opinion on here?

I have never heard of him.

Comes to that, why do we need a different thread for it?

Why is this article not in the designated Joel thread?
Hope it's not the David preece I knew of in our uni team - he never went anywhere near the goal, the little glory hunter, even though the only fella we had who was prepared to go in the nets was about 5'2". Never seemed to score either. If it turns out he went on to become a decent keeper...... Ffs.

I've come to the conclusion that modern keepers just aren't what they used to be!

Joels total rush of blood on Saturday for the penalty he gave away was insane. However it could have just as easily been Joe Hart, Hugo Loris, Simon Minolet doing that. Other than 1 or 2 genuine top class keepers, there are a lot who are a very good, but make daft mistakes

Just thinking that. Some no mark GK having a go at an average GK. It's what the world's been waiting for.

He comes off his line too quickly and in the wrong situations. He got away with another one on saturday in the first half when jags was shepherding the attacker away from goal out wide and Joel rushed out and ended up blocking with his chest where he'd have been far better advised to stick on his line as he was never gonna get beaten on his line from there

I said about a month ago that I thought he'd done very well and now he needed to have a really good run to the end of the season to put to bed any fears that he wasn't good enough. Unfortunately, that just hasn't happened, and he's actually had a very poor run. As far as I'm concerned, I've seen enough over a long enough period of time to suggest that he simply isn't good enough. The idea that he's 'young for a keeper' needs putting to bed too. The days of keepers hitting their peak at 33 have well gone, most of the worlds top keepers are either the same age/younger than him, or were performing at a much higher standard than he is at the same age.
