A defender called Claus Eftevaag. Also Norwegian.

Got Myhre instead though a year later - possibly the most underrated goalie we ever had.
Myrhe was not too bad, considering the shadow of Southall over him.

No one was going to have it easy on replacing the big man.

Nope I was wrong regarding Sunderland. We had played them already and then beat Derby 2 games later so it wasn't the Sunderland game as I thought that was the catalyst. Bloody hell I smoked far too much weed in them days. Boxing day onwards look at this for a set of shocking results

Just think Martinez had the same number of wins in that period. Like you say a shameful way to treat a legend of the club who less than 2 years earlier had won us the cup. Always had my doubts about Johnson from the start, the way he treated joe only confirmed my fears.

But my biggest question in all this, is what the [Poor language removed] happened to cause this massive downturn in form? As has already been alluded to, to go from top 4 in December to 15th in May is a shocking loss of form

Injuries. The loss of Parkinson in particular.

Beat derby away and we're sitting 4th and a few points behind top end of November

Just had a closer look at our results. I deffo remember being touted as an outside shout for the title after we beat Derby in early December, but we were actually only sitting in 7th place after that game.

In fact, considering our form nosedived quite sharply after that, we didn't progress any further up the table than that all season.

So perhaps there wasn't much of a gap in points at the top at that stage of the season, and maybe 7th place was only a few points away from being right in the mix?

Prior to the end of September, our form was actually pretty poor. We were 16th at one stage, and had been dumped out the League Cup over two legs by mighty York City. We also got thumped 4-0 at Wimbledon early on too.

So maybe it wasn't all rosy after all!!

That season started so well too, albeit very briefly.

After winning the cup in 95 and narrowly missing out on Europe in 96 (playing some fantastic attacking footy), I was genuinely mega excited when we deservedly beat Keegan's Newcastle on the opening day (who had challenged for the title the previous season and had just acquired Shearer in the summer), followed by taking a 2-0 halftime lead at Old Trafford a few days later.

Of course, we drew 2-2 and it went downhill from there...

Did a good job when we needed it.But then signed Claus Thomsen which sealed his fate.Claus was later signed by Wolfgang Wolf the manager of Wolfsburg

Slightly off topic, but there's a nice little interview about the 1970 title winning team, with Colin Harvey in the echo. Couldn't be arsed starting a new thread, and the search function only produced threads about Harvey, that are closed to replies.....

One helluva footballer was Colin Harvey and his closing comment about coaches trying to take too much credit these days is bang on. He was a great coach who did his job professionally and quietly leaving the players on the pitch to take the plaudits and accolades.

Yeah sorry mate..I think we were 4th at one point but I remember that night we beat Derby Des Lynham ( yeah I know lol ) had us as his outside challengers for the title. It literally just went tits up so quickly. Someone has just mentioned above, losing Parkinson was massive. Might need to check my link I posted but I'm sire we played Leicester at home??? and he played the first half through the pain barrier ( I think Watson was in charge ) and didn't come on 2nd half, he'd basically cabbaged himself for the cause. As me to one though mate, i was smoking weed for fun so my memories are a little bit mixed up I reckon as I seem to have a few games muddled up in order

That Newcastle match, I remember it well. It was a boiling hot day at Goodison, and I remember Keegan wearing a pale green suit jacket.

We'd had a very good season the year before but were playing a team with a lot of attacking flair who had nearly won the league the year before, and had just signed Shearer after he was top scorer at Euro 96. All the hype was over him, but Ferguson was unplayable that day.

He set up Speed for a debut goal after Unsy had earlier scored a penno.

When we went 2-0 up at half time at Old Trafford the following midweek, I really thought we were going to do something special that season

Was there. Battered them.

Speed was ace.

Aye mate even when the mancs drew level Duncan had a great chance to win it. That first half was Ferguson absolutely firing on all cylinders, both goals are absolute beauties.

Duncan Ferguson vs man united:

Yeah, he done a respectable job for us as manager. Just didn't do as good as Kendall. His record looks much better with hindsight.
