To be fair, it's always been like that, but we're just much better now at getting and sharing news from around the world. It's the reporting that's changed, not the world imo.
He wrote to the government a while back asking for permission to do the same. Obviously refused, then he was sectioned. And released.

Agreed. Also, there appears to be a heightened sense of both awareness and interest in such incidents from around the globe.
Previously, a lot of the stuff that happened in nations that weren't in our direct periphery were simply ignored. Now they're in fact highlighted.
