My thoughts exactly. The other problem we have is that we are constantly looking backwards. Maybe other clubs also do this, I don't know, I don't pay enough attention, but we constantly look to former players and managers to solve our problems despite having been rubbish (relatively) for thirty years or more. There is nobody left in the game who has actually tasted any real success for Everton Football Club but still we hanker after players and coaches who were part of that failure. For what it's worth, I'd have Richarlison on loan in January because we are so short of forward quality. We know he can hit the ground running and we also know he'll run himself into the ground for this club because he has done it before. I wouldn't have him back on a permanent because of the cost (wages and fee), because of his age and because of his injury record. I also think that, as a club, we need a genuinely fresh start and so former players and coaches should not be on our wishlists.
I like Richarlison, but he was no world-beater for us. Is he better than what we have? Of course. What we have is, basically, a giant hole up front. On loan? Yeah, why not. Permanent? No thanks. We have GOT to do better if we are to progress as a club.
As you say, we hanker after those who have been, gone, and won nothing while they were with us. No wonder we continue to win nothing when they come back.
The Friedkins got a pass last summer because of circumstances. But there has to be a genuinely ambitious executable plan next summer. Previous players and managers need not apply.
