I've just come back from my honeymoon, in which I have shunned everton for two weeks in the hope that I would come back to some good news. Instead the only news of note is another promising youngster off due to the lack of first team football! Think I might hibernate for the rest of the summer...

For a club in our position to produce world class talent is something we can't expect or demand, but merely embrace if and when it happens.

I would hope that we can produce a reasonable stream of players who are of a premier league standard however. I mean in the last 10 years, taking Rooney out of the equation, it's not that impressive. You've got Osman and Hibbert -- not world beaters but players who are good academy products -- and then you've got the nearlys and the maybes: Anichebe, Vaughan and yes, Rodwell. Barkley is another Rooney -- we shouldn't expect players of that quality, merely thank the good Lord that they're blues and they found their way to our academy.

I'm with you, but how many clubs have produced better over the same time frame? I'm stuggling. As has been pointed out, it's endemic of the UK youth system over the years and I think has a lot to do with a historical reliance on early-age size and strength over skill-development. Apparently it's different now, but we'll have to wait another ten years to see.

Im sorry, I wasnt aware you watched him more than Moyes, clearly hes made ANOTHER mistake in letting the next Messi leave, heres a list of the young players that have left Everton under Moyes and "made it".

.

That there's no player too bad to play for Everton, I think.

You seem to be saying "maybe Wallace isn't good enough but well Hibbert and Anichebe aren't good enough either and they still get games" which is a lot like me justifying killing someone by saying "maybe murder isn't moral but well Hitler and Mao still did it." Essentially that someone doing something wrong or stupid once means everyone else should also do it, rather than, you know, not make the same mistakes again.

No thats not what i was trying to say. I'll try and break it down :

We have a small squad.

We don't have a lot of money to increase/improve that squad.

So we need to try and do that by bringing in players either cheap (see Moyes' bargains over the years) or by bringing them through the academy.

Now i'm not saying we should be producing the new Rooney every year (like Goat thought i was above), or even regular first team players. Would be nice but not realistic.

But for squad depth and cover surely our best bet would be youngsters graduating through the academy.

We've had a lot through the years who have come along, been touted as potential first teamers but dissapeared into league 1 or Scottish football at best.

Fair enough, if they genuinely are that crap then sure, get rid. Of course if they are then questions should be asked why a club in our financial position isn't producing more first team squad players itself.

But are they that bad that they couldn't provide decent cover in the squad and be worthy of a few games / sub appearances here and there at the very least. Like Duffy last season.

And more to the point, are they really worse than Hibbert and Anichebe to take 2 examples. I know Goat thinks Anichebe is gash and lost of people think the same of Hibbert. Yeah neither player is great, hell neither are good enough to be regulars in their position but they are 2 lads from the academy who got a chance and have made useful members of the squad when they needed to be called on.

Not saying every youth players should be put into the first team squad because they were but are our promising youngsters like Wallace that bad that they can't have a use as cheap backup in a small squad? And if they are that bad, why? Someones failing in a very important role for us.
