Barkley,Rodwell,Duffy, Anichebe all in 1st team squad, three are promising players, the other may get us enough money to sign Pienaar, don't diss our academy too much.

I just think if this guy stood out in the academy, which he did -- he was considered one of the better prospects -- and he's still not even close to making the grade, then it's worrying.

And I'm one of Vic's biggest supporters, but he'd be better used as an example on my side of the argument, mate.

It's the same with Forshaw who left this summer too, wasn't he under 18 player of the year or something?! It all seems a bit strange to me.

I know vic is the butt of a lot of jokes, but he has a good record of instant substitution goals. Think he is now our leading goal scorer off the bench in everyone history.

Thing about the academy is: its about producing players to offer choice to the first team, there will always come a point with each player were you have to say is he better then what we have? Is he a first team option?

TBF your doing well to get two or three every couple of seasons.

Its a delicate balance, Barca have found a formula, but when you actually break it town - its not as many as you think in their first team - maybe its just the luck of the draw though or that cycle. Ajax have been pretty anonymos since they produced that wonderfull team from their academy in the 90's, Arsenal tried it after they went through the season unbeaten and it hasnt really worked for them when you consider end product- trophy wise.

????

What a silly comment.

Are you claiming that Barca MADE Messi, rather than Messi is just God?

No, because I don't use Messi to say why Barca's academy is good.

I'd point to the way they instil their methods and beliefs upon their players, and the ones that come through are then able to walk into the team and immediately know their role, and how to fit in.

Did the academy not produce Rodwell and Barkley since Rooney ? and Duffy looks as if he will make the grade as well.

Well to take this deeper, I personally feel that England as a Country, simply dont produce that many trully talented footballers.

To take it further, any Nation, that has to turn to utter garbage like Jordan Henderson has SERIOUS talent producing issues.

Well that's a larger issue, and one I do agree with.

I'm not saying our academy is jarg either, by the way. Just suggesting that maybe we and/or the club overemphasise its quality to gloss over our many shortcomings.

We just want them to succeed and when they dont, we question why, but the simple truth is, they just arent THAT good.

We all want a Rooney, a Gerrard, but those players are special.

Its why we all want Barkley to play, sure the lad has shown hes got the talent, but the main thing is, the boy is living our dreams, speaking as somebody whos football career has possibly past him by, hes living the dream we had as a child, the same dream my Son currently harbours, the same dream we all had at 1 point.

But guess what, I was utter crap!

For a club in our position to produce world class talent is something we can't expect or demand, but merely embrace if and when it happens.

I would hope that we can produce a reasonable stream of players who are of a premier league standard however. I mean in the last 10 years, taking Rooney out of the equation, it's not that impressive. You've got Osman and Hibbert -- not world beaters but players who are good academy products -- and then you've got the nearlys and the maybes: Anichebe, Vaughan and yes, Rodwell. Barkley is another Rooney -- we shouldn't expect players of that quality, merely thank the good Lord that they're blues and they found their way to our academy.
