2025/26 James Tarkowski

Just watched a post match with and he is clearly gutted and says he switched off for their second and that’s what ultimately cost the win. Devastated.

Tricky. Laughable if anyone says he has been anything other than fantastic since he joined. He isn’t a captain for me. The game has moved away from “leading by example.” You have to do that AND drag your teammates around the pitch AND dominate the referee.

He always had a few games per season where he’d be a bit random, usually getting to focussed on having a physical battle, but then costing us goals. This season there have been a few more “off” games than usual. When he’s good he is a superb central defender. But when inconsistencies start, it’s a worry. Only goes one way sadly.

Dropped below his usual solid standards this season.

Think age has caught up with him really fast, defending inside the box no issue really but outside he’s looking a liability most weeks, too many unforced errors creeping in.

Hopeless on the 2nd goal. He’s not a Moyes-type CB, that he’s close to the first name on the team sheet is baffling
Are we going JOB and Keane, with Patto RB as the alternative? Not saying I disagree, but can understand why a manager would think about that then bottle it.

Garner is the best RB at the club by country mile, and for me when Gana plays, may as well put Garner RB as he is never the same with Idrissa. But I can get why a managers arse would twitch at the thought of that too.

Basically if we had a proper PL standard specialist RB it solves about 12 other decisions for the manager, including the phasing out of Tarky.

A few weeks ago you’d go Branthwaite- Keane or JOB. He had the ability to sit Tarkowksi but didn’t.

But I agree about RB. One of our top 3 CBs is stuck at RB

Who are you playing as the 2 centre backs then.
Branthwaite (if fit) and O’Brien. We need to buy also. Tarkowski is 34 in November. We’ve had the best of him, should be looking at selling. We won’t though. Sentimental FC because he’s “good round the place”. If we want progress, you don’t keep playing him until he’s absolutely finished. The decline is there now.

He's been showing signs since last season that he's on his way out. He will get lauded by people who don't watch us every week as despite making plenty of mistakes and looking poor on the eye, he still ranks high in a lot of stats and metrics that they measure. Watching him is a different story though and he's becoming a player that looks on course to give away a goal every game.

It's also why I think we need to sign a CB this summer. Yes, I want to move JOB into CB alongside JB but we can't rely on the latter for fitness at the moment and Keane/Tarkowski just aren't good enough to be starting consistently.
